Now according to multiple sources, it appears that it's the A's is the team that Lester will be move to in exchange for Yoenis Céspedes. If true, I have to give Billy Beane props for that deal.

Jonny Gomes is part of the trade to Oakland as well. It's clear the A's are going all-in this year.

Apparently its a done deal

WEEI's Alex Speier reports that the A's have acquired left-hander Jon Lester and outfielder Jonny Gomes from the Red Sox for outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.

Boston also gets a competitive-balance pick in the 2015 MLB Amateur Draft. Without many elite-level prospects remaining in the wake of the Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel trade, the A's had to get creative to work out a deal for Lester. And this sure is creative. Cespedes has big-time power, a huge throwing arm, and is under contractual control through 2015, so it's a big piece to give up for the penny-pinching A's. Lester, who can become a free agent this winter, gets a sizable fantasy boost with the move to pitcher-friendly Oakland.

I'm a little surprised the Red Sox went with Cespides rather than prospects. Cespides is a free agent after next season and at 30 years old will likely be looking for at least an 8-year deal and possibly as long as a 10-year deal. The Red Sox don't have a lot of money locked up in long-term deals, Pedroia is the only person signed past 2017, so they can afford Cespides, but since the Carl Crawford contract they haven't given any long-term deals to players in their 30s.

Yeah, that's quite the playoff rotation with Lester, Sonny Gray (12-3, 2.65 ERA), Scott Kazmir (12-3, 2.37 ERA), and Jeff Samaradzija (2-1 in AL, 2.92 ERA for the season). It also gives the A's a pitcher with a lot of playoff experience which they needed as Samardzija has never pitched in the playoffs, Gray only has 1 start, and Kazmir hasn't pitched in the playoffs since 2009.

Red Sox keep dealing, giving up John Lackey to the Cardinals for outfielder Allen Craig and pitcher Joe Kelly. Lackey is only due $500,000 next year due to a clause in his contract that called for his deal to be extended for a year at the league minimum if he missed significant time due to an elbow injury, and he missed the entire 2012 season after having Tommy John surgery in 2011.
