Phillies pull Hamels back from waivers

The Cubs claimed Hamels and had negotiations with the Phillies about a possible deal, but it was a huge long shot from the beginning. Philly could entertain trading the left-hander over the winter when they can talk to all 29 of the other teams. Hamels is guaranteed $22.5 million each of the next four seasons.

If I'm not mistaken, the second time a team places the same player on waivers in the same season, and a team places a claim, they can't pull him back (I might be off a bit because I'm a bit hazy on all the waiver rules in MLB).

Why would they put him on again? Teams put almost everyone through waivers in August to give them flexibility. It's almost never newsworthy.

I've always wondered this about the MLB. What's the point of a trade 'deadline' if you can put players on waivers to exclusively negotiate a trade with a particular team.

Great job of us stinking it up these last two games. If we lose at least two out of 3 against the O's Mon, Tues,Wed, we can definitely kiss the AL east good bye (and probably the wild card as well). If we sweep the O's, things will be very interesting in the division.
