As other's have stated, it wasn't our pitching that hurt us, it was our bats. Even after all this, we're still mathematically still in it (go figure). With that said, a lot (and mean a lot) would have to go out way for us to grab a wild card.

Can one of the Yankee fans explain why Jeter is so beloved? Is it his longevity? That's really the only thing that separates him from other recent Yankees.

I'll answer Syrco's question with a question. Why was Chipper Jones so beloved? If he's going to ask about Jeter, lets ask about Chipper then. Also, I don't know if Olbermann was being serious or not.

Top 2 all-time switch hitter. MVP award winner. Solid defensive player. Top 2 offensive player on the Braves every year.

When was Jeter ever the best player on the team? Jeter was a good hitter. He has 3000 hits for a reason. But he's treated like a God here. Even Chipper didn't have that in Atlanta. Plenty of fans wanted the team to move on years before he retired.

And Olbermann was being serious.

I understand he was a part of the franchise, but why is he considered so much greater than guys like Paul O'Neil or Bernie Williams? Hell, Jorge said he's the greatest Yankee ever. He's not even top 20 on that list, and not even the top one during his career (Mariano)

He's had something that Chipper will never have (couldn't find a pic of all 5):



Captain, most hits by a Yankee, most doubles as a Yankee, most runs as a Yankee, pretty much owns every Yankee record there is. Brought 5 rings to the BX. Jeter was hosed for the MVP twice. Plus he did things right.

Can't put Mo ahead of Jeter. Mo is my second favorite player of all-time, but he's a closer. Jeter put on the cleats everyday and went out there. No comparison. And he's a top 5 Yankee.

He at best brought 1 ring to the Yankees. A lot of really good players were on those teams in the late 90s.


And the other stats you posted are exactly my point. He never had many great statistical seasons, but he played so long and always for the Yankees, so the numbers add up. I'm not saying he wasn't good or isn't a HoFer. But there's no way he's a top 5 Yankee. Gehrig, Ruth, Dimaggio, Mantle, Munson, Rivera, Berra, Ford, arguably Mattingly. And that's just off the top of my head.
