That nonsense Olbermann was spewing is ridiculous. ESPN needs to can his ass. And this is coming from a Blue Jays fan.

And the other stats you posted are exactly my point. He never had many great statistical seasons, but he played so long and always for the Yankees, so the numbers add up. I'm not saying he wasn't good or isn't a HoFer. But there's no way he's a top 5 Yankee. Gehrig, Ruth, Dimaggio, Mantle, Munson, Rivera, Berra, Ford, arguably Mattingly. And that's just off the top of my head.
It goes Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, Dimaggio, Jeter. Period. End of story. He was hosed in 2006 and 2009 for the MVP. It's also what he brought in the clubhouse. With Jeter, he is the prototypical #2 hitter in the lineup. He hits, can steal, gets on base, has a little pop. Everyday you could pencil in #2 and you know what you would get. Leadership, production, and a winner.

In 09, he basically split votes with Mo and Tex which is why Morneau won it that year. It's really hard for a Yankee to win MVP. You basically have to have #'s far and away better than everyone to win it (eq. A-Rod in 07 #'s). The last Yankee who won it before A-Rod in 05 was Mattingly in 85.

The last couple minutes talking about how he's bad now wasn't very fair, but he made good points. Jeter's defense can't just be ignored when discussing him, and his great plays are often given far more credit in his overall performance than they should be. Andrelton Simmons made one of those leaping throws against the Mets a few weeks ago, and one of the Mets said Simmons defense reminds him of Jeter, which if anything is pretty insulting to a guy that has 50+ DRS in 2.5 years.

So, this inning eliminated the Yankees. It's amazing just how good the Orioles are at these big innings.

Still Jeter/Mo & Tex split votes between each other. In other news, Lousiville Slugger is renaming a bat. The P72 (a bat that Jeter has used his entire pro career) will be renamed the DJ2.

So with the rain scheduled for tomorrow does today become Jeters last home game at Yankee stadium as if there's a rain out tomorrow with no playoff implications I cant see MLB rescheduling the game.

Yeah but that means Mauer and Morneau should have split as well....

If tomorrow's game is rained out, it will all depend if the O's are tied with the Angels for the best record in the AL.

UPDATE: MLB is monitoring the weather and will be the on making the call (it sounds like the game will be played, but with a late start time).

Twins pitcher Phil Hughes pitched 8 innings today but didn't pitch in the 9th after over an hour rain delay. He ended the day (and his season) with 209.2 innings pitched. He was due a $500,000 bonus if he hit 210 innings pitched this season. He would have easily hit the 210 innings mark but his scheduled start last Friday was rained out, pushing his start back a day and making it so he couldn't pitch yesterday and the season finale as planned.

With lots of rain expected tomorrow, it's possible that I saw Jeter's final home game.

Again, longevity. Most Yankee greats didn't even play 15 years with the team, while Jeter played 20.

And playoff rankings for modern players are terrible. At most, the Yankee greats had 7 games per postseason. Jeter had 19.

Rank him among his modern peers then...

Same can be said of Maddux or Cal Ripken. How long did they play... Really great players play for a long time... And then they accumulate great stats.

Jeter played 20 seasons because he was great for 17. 1 was injury-riddled, 1 was a Sept call-up in 1995, and the last was his retirement year. In reality he only played 18 full seasons.

Not sure how we are having a discussion of how Jeter is overrated unless you are a hater...

I'm not saying he's outright overrated. He's a HoFer, as I've said before. He was very good for a long time. But he's not a top 5 or top 10 Yankee by any means. He's likely not even a top 10 guy of his era, though steroids have tainted some of the guys who had far more talent (Clemens, Bonds)
