Not surprisingly Giancarlo Stanton's contract is heavily backloaded:

Quote:
According to a major league source who had seen the terms, Stanton's salaries over those first three seasons will be only $6.5 million in 2015, $9 million in 2016 and $14.5 million in 2017, far less than he could have earned through arbitration in 2015-16 and then via free agency. He would then earn $77 million over the next three seasons, and could opt out of the contract after 2020, following his age 30 season.

So the Marlins would be on the hook for only $107 million of the deal over the first six seasons, which computes to an average annual value of just $17.83 million per season before Stanton would have the right to exercise the opt-out clause.

If Stanton remains a Marlin, the $218 million he would collect over those final seven seasons would average out to $31.14 million a year. He will have a complete no-trade clause through the life of the contract, a first for the Marlins under the ownership of Jeffrey Loria.

Sources said the contract was structured in a way that reflects Stanton's desire to give the Marlins the financial flexibility to construct a winning team around him in the early seasons of the deal. If they don't use that flexibility to add the pieces to build a contender, he could walk away and become a free agent again at age 31.

I respect Stanton's loyalty. He really wants Miami to build a team.

Jon Lester is apparently interested in Atlanta, but no way they can match some offers he'll get.

According to the linked story it's nearly a done deal that the Panda won't be returning to San Francisco:

Quote:
The Giants offered Pablo the same contract given to Hunter Pence, five years at $90 million. Sandoval wanted that deal last Spring when Giants were justifiably suspicious about Pablo’s physical condition. But when that offer came after the World Series, Sandoval countered by asking for a seven year deal.

Sandoval was in Boston yesterday where I am told there is a 90 percent chance that he will sign with the Red Sox. The other 10 percent goes to the Toronto Blue Jays.

So what happened with the Giants? I’m told they were never his first choice, which is why he asked for seven years — a request the Giants were highly unlikely to accommodate. If the Giants want to get back in the race, they will have to up the ante, which team officials are considering.

From a business stand point I would not give him more then 6 years. He wants to get paid which i totally understand and he deserves... But anything more then 6 years at $110-$120M is just crazy especially with his up and down weight issues...

He's done so much for our team and I will always remember him for that, he's a great player, I want him to stay but not at 7 years and that type of money locked into one player

Will be sad seeing him go

The Red Sox just showed they are still major players in the free agent market after reportedly agreeing to a 5-year, $90 million deal with shortstop Hanley Ramirez and a deal somewhere in the 5-year, $100 million range with third baseman Pablo Sandoval. Ramirez may end up playing the outfield as the Red Sox already have 22-year-old Xander Bogaerts at shortstop. The Red Sox are already loaded with outfielders so they are going to have to move someone, with Yoenis Cespedes the most likely candidate.

Both these deals carry significant risk. Ramirez has been fairly injury-prone, only playing 128 games last season, 86 games in 2013, and 92 games in 2011 due to injuries. Sandoval has had issues with his weight throughout his career and there are concerns that he won't be as motivated to keep his weight down once he gets a long-term deal.

I think Boston is going to seriously regret both of these deals. They're paying out $190 mill for Hanley who is always hurt and Sandoval who is good but not worth anywhere close to $20 mill/year.

I agree with all of that, but he's such a huge part of our post season success and always comes through when it matters most. We dont win the last 2 World Series without him.

He will be really missed.

Good luck in Boston Panda, thank you for everything you did for us

Did Boston really need to unload that much on their infield with their entire rotation looking this awful? This just doesn't make sense to me.

Hanley's never even played outfield other than winter ball. What are they gonna do trade Ortiz and Cespedes away for full time starters?

We'll gladly take Boegarts off their hands if they're that stupid.

Apparently the initial numbers on Hanley Ramirez's contract were incorrect. It's not a 5-year, $90 million deal as reported, it's a 4-year, $88 million deal with 5th year vesting option worth $22 million. No word on what needs to happen for the 5th year to vest or if there's a buyout if it doesn't vest.

Red Sox overpaid for Panda

Quote:

John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle confirms that the Red Sox have signed Pablo Sandoval.

Shea says the official announcement is only pending a physical. Jake Wesley, who's not affiliated with a news agency, was first to break word of the agreement on Twitter Sunday night, calling it a five-year deal worth close to $100 million. Sandoval will play primarily at third base in Boston (with some DH starts mixed in), which means Hanley Ramirez is likely ticketed for a move to left field. It's been a productive 24 hours for Boston's offense.

Maybe the Red Sox are planning on turning Hanley into a catcher.
