Out of all the teams in MLB the Cardinals would have been one of the last teams I'd expect to get investigated for something like this:

WASHINGTON — The F.B.I. and Justice Department prosecutors are investigating front-office officials for the St. Louis Cardinals, one of the most successful teams in baseball over the past two decades, for hacking into the internal networks of a rival team to steal closely guarded information about player personnel.

Investigators have uncovered evidence that Cardinals officials broke into a network of the Houston Astros that housed special databases the team had built, according to law enforcement officials. Internal discussions about trades, proprietary statistics and scouting reports were compromised, the officials said.

Law enforcement officials believe the hacking was executed by vengeful front-office employees for the Cardinals hoping to wreak havoc on the work of Jeff Luhnow, the Astros’ general manager who had been a successful and polarizing executive with the Cardinals until 2011.

Investigators believe Cardinals officials, concerned that Mr. Luhnow had taken their idea and proprietary baseball information to the Astros, examined a master list of passwords used by Mr. Luhnow and the other officials who had joined the Astros when they worked for the Cardinals. The Cardinals officials are believed to have used those passwords to gain access to the Astros’ network, law enforcement officials said.

I just saw it on SportsCenter. If true, this is really beneath the Cardinals. They have always been viewed as a classy organization. I wonder what the punishment would be if this is accurate.

Wow, I was always impressed with the Cardinals when were rivals in the NL Central. Those were great years in the early 2000's when we were going head to head for the NL Championship.

I'm assuming this was just a couple rogue employees who didn't get along with Luhnow when he was with the Cardinals, but this could still lead to some pretty major penalties for the Cardinals, not to mention potential criminal charges for the people involved.

I really don't know what kind of punishment MLB can impose. Taking away draft picks isn't as major a punishment as it is to an NBA or NFL team since so many draft picks never make the majors or even sign with the team. A fine wouldn't be that major since St. Louis is such a profitable team. I don't know if MLB could possibly limit St. Louis' free agent signings, as I'm sure the MLBPA would fight such a move.

Whatever the maximum the league can do, they should do it. This is MAJOR.

The bylaws basically say that the league can give any punishment except a fine exceeding 2 million or 500 thousand for the owner or employees...

In the case of conduct by Major League Clubs, owners, officers, employees or players that is deemed by the Commissioner not to be in the best interests of Baseball, punitive action by the Commissioner for each offense may include any one or more of the following: (a) a reprimand; (b) deprivation of a Major League Club of representation in Major League Meetings; (c) suspension or removal of any owner, officer or employee of a Major League Club; (d) temporary or permanent ineligibility of a player; (e) a fine, not to exceed $2,000,000 in the case of a Major League Club, not to exceed $500,000 in the case of an owner, officer or employee, and in an amount consistent with the then-current Basic Agreement with the Major League Baseball Players Association, in the case of a player; (f) loss of the benefit of any or all of the Major League Rules, including but not limited to the denial or transfer of player selection rights provided by Major League Rules 4 and 5; and (g) such other actions as the Commissioner may deem appropriate.
