Why in the world was he pitching last night in Philly on short rest, when they could've pitched him on full rest in NY tomorrow?

The worst secret in the world is that A.J. struggles away from Yankee Stadium. There are a lot of decisions that have backfired that I can get over, but having him pitch game 5 was pretty damn stupid. In fact, I will go so far as to say that it may have cost them the championship. Now you have back-to-back-to-back pitchers going on 3 days' rest. Better hope some bats step up and the bullpen buckles down.

Edit: I forgot CC's start in game 4 was on 3 days' rest as well.

Who do they start in game 5 if they sit Burnett? They've gone a 3 man rotation the whole postseason so they'd have to start someone who hasn't started since the regular season. If they don't start Burnett in game 5 what does Pettitte do? He's got a great postseason history and I wouldn't want to bench him. I would assume they'd still want to pitch C.C. in game 7 so would they use Pettitte in relief? I'm not necessarily saying the Yankees made the right decision, I didn't pay enough attention to them in the regular season to know, but I just don't see a good alternative.

Pettitte, in general has been pretty strong is post season play the only problem I see with him right now is working on 3 day rest.

I would've thrown Gaudin out there. Going against Lee they must've known their chances to win were limited to begin with. Why waste Burnett on a game you're probably going to lose?

Send Gaudin out there, if he gets hammered, oh well. But save Burnett's arm for another day.

As far as Pettitte goes, I think it'd be safe to have him available for relief, considering CC didn't look great in his last start, so who knows how tired he might look in his next one, and how deep into Game 7 he could go.

Instead it seems like Girardi is using Gaudin for that role (based on him not using Gaudin in relief at all last night, it seems like Girardi is saving him for something).

Also, I don't want to sound like Chicken Little or anything, because the Yankees are obviously not in panic mode, and are still safely in the driver's seat for the series.

Instead of dreading on last night's loss, just consider that the Yankees took 2 of 3 in Philly, and that's more than they needed to do.

The Yankees bullpen seems all over the place (who can you trust? nobody really... maybe Robertson and Marte) but the Phillies are no better (they didn't even bring in their closer last night, in the top of the 9th... great trust there).

If the Phils won a close game, like 3-2 or something, then yesterday's loss probably wouldn't have felt so bad. But AJ's horrible start seems to be what made it seem so bad, at least to me, because it brings into question whether they should've just saved him for later.

Came across a few sad pictures:

1) More Yankee Stadium demolition...

2) The awesome crowd at Game 1 of the World Series (the tickets were sold, but they couldn't be bothered to sit in their seats)...

3) Macy's and the Philadelphia Inquirer getting a little ahead of themselves...

Default tense confrontation in the Phillies clubhouse

Quote:
PHILADELPHIA – Phillies pitchers Brett Myers(notes) and Cole Hamels(notes) had a short but tense confrontation in the team’s clubhouse following Game 5 of the World Series, according to one witness, words that stemmed from Hamels’ recent statement that he was eager for his season to end.

It really looks awful having no fans in those seats I don't understand why they over priced them so much. After the first inning if people aren't in those seats they should take kids or fans unable to pay for the seats and let them fill them and enjoy the game.

I could see them charging a kings ransom for them after like 3 back to back world series but not winning since 2000.

Toefer...no more pics of the demolition..It's too sad. I grew up in that stadium. My father watched the Don Larson perfect game there...so much history to be torn down. It still amazes me that the stadium was torn down so soon. Granted, a new stadium is always good with up-to date features but Fenway opened in 1912. Yankee Stadium opened in 1923..Fenway is about a 10 yr construction difference and there's been no talks of a new stadium.

I love the new stadium but I really think the stadium should be been made into a museum etc. Then again...the Yankees may have had to risk the franchise being moved to a different location. It can go either way. I know a lot of fans are still ticked off about it. I wanted to buy a seat...prolly get one if they go on sale $750 is a bit much for me now.

As far as tomorrow goes....I agree with many of you that Pettitte may not be sharp due to yet another short rested pitcher. I am hoping the Yankees can put it away tomorrow but if it goes to game 7 then...it's going to get really interesting. Worst case scenario...yes if the Yanks lose, AJ will be blamed. Well...Girardi will be questioned as to why he pitched him on such short rest.

The people I talked to today basically just uttered the words "Utley" and ya..that is pretty much how it went. I threw in my game 7 scenario...CC can not throw down the middle to Utley...I hope it doesn't go to game 7..but I am getting nervous.

i know everyone is saying that they think it was a bad idea to start AJ etc on 3 days rest. In reality, yes, it would have made sense to start Gaudin against Lee the way he pitched it game 1. However, from what ive been reading, AJ is 4-0 with a 2.33 ERA on three days rest in his career, including an 8-1/3-inning gem for Toronto against the Yankees last July. I mean, that has to give a manager some confidence, no??

Also, dont you think it would have been a HUGE blow to Pettite if he got bumped out of the rotation for Gaudin... 3 days rest or not.....

The tickets were sold, but the problem is they're priced so high that it's mostly wealthy business-y people buying them, and they can't be bothered to actually sit and watch the game if there's an underground bar/buffet waiting for them to use.

I can see why the Yankees needed a new stadium, eventually, but I would've preferred that they played in Shea (or Citi Field) for a few seasons while the old one was gutted and rebuilt. Then even if the shell of the stadium is completely new, there's still the significance of having the same field in the same bit of space on the earth and all that.

I remember going to my first game there, and getting chills when I peaked through one of the tunnels and saw the field for the first time.

I don't think 4 games is a huge enough sample to put too much faith in, and I don't know who the other 3 games were against. Plus they were all regular season games, which aren't really big deals. The Phillies were fighting to stay alive in the World Series, and were probably helped by AJ not being at full-strength.

If I had the choice of pitching AJ on full rest on the road, or full rest at home, I'd pitch him at home. So short-rest on the road vs full rest at home is a no-brainer.

I'm sure Pettitte's ego might have been hurt a bit, but not much. If the Yankees weren't using a 3-man rotation to begin with, Pettitte would only be pitching once in the series anyway. I think he knows his place on the team as the #3 starter, and wouldn't be too insulted by being replaced with Burnett for game 6.

Yeah, it's like Rudy Guiliani getting his usual spot taken away in game 1 because Michelle Obama wanted to go to the game, but because it was raining she decided not to go so a very good seat that is often in the camera view was just empty the whole game. It's rare that the rich people with the best seats are huge fans, they just buy the tickets for the status symbol and to entertain clients.

yea, 4 games isnt enough to tell.... but im sure if he was 2-2, he wouldnt have pitched... idk, i really dont like Girardi and think hes made way too many questionable calls this postseason... all he plays is the numbers with no managerial instincts...when is his contract up? becuase if we dont win this series, im very curious to see what will happen with him

That stadium has a lot of memories for me.It was always a fun stadium to go to and see a Yankee game...nothing beats the fans in there.

I am curious to know if it go to 7 games, are we going to see CC vs Hamels or Lee again...and then questions will be asked why didn't he use Guadin in game 5.

It should be Hamels...If they want to try and pitch Lee on 3 days rest..then well..

I hope the Yankees squirrel finds a new home. I saw him live and it was hilarious.

toefer- that would have been a good idea to at least use some part of the old stadium and include it in the new one. They wanted everything 100% new. Minus Munson's locker and office supplies, I doubt much came over..
