The Nationals hired Dusty Baker as their manager today. They had tried to hire Bud Black initially but were being incredibly cheap, only offering him a cheap one-year deal and after counteroffers never went beyond two guaranteed years. Baker agreed to a two-year deal at $2 million per year, well below the $3.5 million he made when he was the Reds manager.
I'm surprised the Nationals would get so cheap when they should be a World Series contender. According to Forbes Nationals owner Ted Lerner is worth $4.9 billion and at age 90 he doesn't have time to be patient. You would think he'd be willing to hire whoever he thought gave them the best chance at winning a title, not the manager who would accept the cheapest deal. |

Colby Rasmus accepted the $15.8 million qualifying offer from the Astros, becoming the first player to accept a qualifying offer. It's probably a smart move by Rasmus because if he had declined it he might have been in a situation like Stephen Drew Kendrys Morales, and Nelson Cruz faced where teams didn't want to give up a first round pick for them and they ended up making significantly less than the money the QO would have paid.
Rasmus might not be the only player to accept a QO this year. Pitchers Brett Anderson and Ian Kennedy could accept it to delay their free agency until next year as the free agent pitching market is loaded this year and very weak next year. Catcher Matt Wieters could accept it because there's not many teams in the market for a catcher and his value is low after only playing 100 games over the last 2 years due to Tommy John surgery. Edit: Wieters and Anderson both accepted the qualifying offers. Kennedy declined the offer. Last edited by fatediesel; 11-13-2015 at 09:06 PM. |
