He'll have one more contract before he hits free agency. He doesn't become a free agent until after the 2018 season.

Glad Ivan Rodriguez, Tim Raines and Jeff Bagwell made the HOF. Hoffman and Vlad Guerrero seem like near locks for next year.

I hope Edgar Martinez eventually makes it. His vote share is spiking in recent years.

Seems like more and more voters every year are turning around on Clemens and Bonds. Vote share of each is close to 60% now, up 9%~ from the prior ballot.

Seems like the one borderline HOF player dropping in the vote is Schilling and it's mostly because of the way he conducts himself. His constant social media diatribes and bizarre statements may well cost him a HOF spot.

Surprised Posada only took 3.8%, losing his spot on the ballot going forward. He was one of the best catchers of his era. His mediocre postseason numbers probably didn't help.

I don't see Posada ever getting in.

He literally cannot. If a player gets below 5% he's off the ballot for good. I never believed he was a HOF'er but I thought he'd get like 10%~ or so.

EDIT - Think I was mistaken. <5% only drops a player off the ballot for one year. But ya, Posada is never getting in unless it's the old timers committee like 50+ years from now.

It's a shame that the committee keeps overlooking Dale Murphy, after the writers did it for years.

Fred McGriff also doesn't get the votes he should.

Next year will complete the Braves HOF collection. Chipper Jones will be the last great Braves player from their 90's teams elected to the HOF. My guess is Chipper Jones and Jim Thome make it first ballot. I think Vlad Guerrero and Hoffman likely make it too.

Omar Vizquel is eligible in 2018 as well but I think he'll probably be 2nd or 3rd ballot inductee. One of those decent but not great hitters but all-time great defensive players with 11 gold gloves.

A agree on McGriff getting snubbed. Finished just shy of 500 home runs while playing a good chunk of his career in the dead ball era. Finished top-10 in MVP voting 6 times. And it was obvious by his physique he didn't dope. Statistically speaking McGriff should be getting FAR more votes than he's getting.

I think Murphy got snubbed badly because he mostly played for the team when they were terrible. The guy won 2 MVP awards and hit 398 HR in the peak dead ball era. He was also a good defensive player (5 gold gloves), which gets overlooked. Can't believe he never cracked 25% of the vote.

The 1994-1995 strike killed McGriff's Hall of Fame chances. If he had gotten to 500 homers he would have gotten in years ago as no clean hitter with 500 homers has been left out of the Hall, and McGriff easily would have gotten over 500 if he didn't miss 3+ months worth of games during his prime.

That cost him maybe 15~ HR. I know 500 is often cited as a "magic number" but I doubt McGriff hitting around 510 career HR instead of 490 something would have bumped him all that much in voting. Might have allowed him to get around 40%~ (still far below the 75% needed) of the vote instead of 15-20%.

So very happy to see Bagwell joining Biggio in the Hall. The only thing better would have been if they could have gone in the same year.

This is pretty spot on. Didn't even think about this but it's true.

This is terrible, 25 is to young

Yordano Ventura has been killed in a car accident in his native Dominican Republic.

Christian Moreno of ESPN first reported the awful news, and the Royals have since confirmed it. Ventura's fellow countryman, Andy Marte, was killed in a separate accident, as well, in what has been a tragic morning for baseball. Ventura was just 25 years of age. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.

That's terrible. He was a hot head who loved setting off brawls but it's a shame he passed.

Former MLB player Andy Marte also died in a separate car accident in the Dominican Republic the same day.

Well, guess nobody ever said the sports memorabilia business wasn't ghoulish. A memorabilia website if offering a Yordano Ventura, Andy Marte autograph combo as it's deal of the day. Both men died the same day in auto accidents.
