Respectfully, gentlemen, I'd have to take a contrarian opinion about numbers getting retired. Just being a really, really good player on a team that won a number of championships should not be enough to get ones number retired, especially on a team like the New York Yankees.

Number retirement, in my humble opinion, should be reserved for the true greats of a franchise. And the Yankees are the gold standard the way my Packers are for the NFL. When I look at a list of greats....

Babe Ruth
Lou Gehrig
Joe DiMaggio
Mickey Mantle
Yogi Berra
Bernie Williams

Just to select a few....which name jumps out as not belonging?

Have a Bernie Williams day at Yankee Stadium. Thank him for his many great years of play. But no way should a guy with a sub 50 WAR and a 125 OPS + for his career have his number retired by the Bronx Bombers. I'm sorry, but he was never a truly elite player. He played in an era where offensive numbers were through the roof. He led the league in batting once, and never led the league in any other single category. He finished 7th in one MVP race, 10th in another. And, he was way overrated, defensively. He won four gold gloves with a combined -2.6 dWAR.

No way is he worthy of having his number retired alongside The Bambino, The Iron Horse, The Yankee Clipper, The Commerce Comet or Yogi.

Pettitte made fewer All-Star teams than either Williams or Posada and Pettitte admitted he used PEDs while he was on the Yankees, but Pettitte does have the 5th ring while Bernie and Jorge have 4.

As for this year's team, Yanks are definitely in a bit of a funk right now, especially with their starting pitching. Going to be interesting to see how long it will take them to get out of it given the young and inexperienced players that they have. These next two weeks are big because they're not playing any plus .500 teams (7 vs Royals, 3 vs. Rays/Athletics).

Yeah, my Rangers did good for a stint. But can they compete in the Post Season. Yeah, that's all I really care about. I don't give a sh*t who we beat, or don;t beat in the Regular season. It's all about October Baseball, for Me..

They've only made the playoffs 8 times in 56 years. It took them 35 years to make their first appearance. You sound like they're a shoe-in!

Braves bullpen has not allowed a hit in the last 15 1/3 innings, 54 batters (so 8 walks/HBP/errors in that stretch).

The group fronted by Derek Jeter and Jeb Bush is reportedly out of the bidding for the Marlins. Weeks ago it was reported the group had agreed to purchase the team for $1.3 billion, but those reports turned out to be premature and the Jeter-Bush group couldn't get the financial backing to buy the team, which reportedly is $400 million in debt and losing money every year. A group fronted by Tagg Romney and Tom Glavine is considered the front-runners now for the team. Jeter may still try and get a group to purchase the team or join another group.

This is the most political ownership battle I can recall. First it seemed like a group including Trump's controversial, scandal plauged son in law Jared Kushner was close to a deal. That fell through and Jeb Bush's group emerged. Now that's dead and Mitt Romney's son is involved in a group looking to buy. What's next, a group headed by the Obama's?

Former MLB star Luis Gonzalez helped pull a woman out of a fiery car crash to safety on Friday.

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/fo...ery-car-crash/

Quote:
Former Diamondbacks great Luis Gonzalez recently performed a good deed at great personal hazard. On Friday in Arizona, Gonzalez witnessed a head-on collision, which occurred after the car in front of Gonzalez jumped the median. Once he saw the gravity of the situation, he leapt into action.
The Arizona Republic tells the story:

"I was just trying to get the lady out of the car," Gonzalez said. "She was a little dazed and groggy. I was like, 'Open the door, open the door, the other car is on fire.' I didn't know if the car was going to blow up or something because I was seeing flames coming out of it."

[Passenger in Gonzalez's car Artie] Cuffari said [Kevin] Mehan managed to open the door and Gonzalez pulled the woman from the vehicle and to safety.
"Gonzo pulled her out and held her the whole time," Cuffari said. "She didn't know what hit her."

As you can see in the video above, Gonzalez comforted the woman after the crash. Police later told Gonzalez that the woman and the other driver involved in the accident were faring well.

My Astros are playing very well right now. Loving the depth we have on offense, we just need the back end of our rotation to be good enough to give the bats a chance to win it for us. I see us trading some of our prospects for a starting pitcher and maybe some bullpen help. I would hate to see some of these prospects go on to have a great major league career elsewhere but if the players in return help us finally win a World Series then it is worth it.

Judge home run measured at 496 feet. Longest home run since measurements were first tracked in 2009.

I guess you could say he certainly passed sentence on that ball and it was found guilty.
