According to Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the Twins have talked to the Pirates about acquiring Gerrit Cole.

Berardino adds that the pitching-hungry Twins have also been in touch with the Rays about right-hander Jake Odorizzi, and they're known to have interest in a number of starters on the free agent market. Cole finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 4.26 ERA in 203 innings, but the 27-year-old registered a 3.23 ERA in 579 1/3 innings between 2013-2016 and he is under club control through 2019. Pittsburgh would probably want multiple prospects in return.

Trammell, Morris on Modern Era HOF ballot

DETROIT -- Alan Trammell and Jack Morris will get another chance at induction to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The former Tigers greats are on the 10-person Modern Baseball Era ballot that will be considered by a 16-person committee at next month's Winter Meetings.

The committee is part of the Hall's effort to give a second look at players who are not elected by voting members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. It has long been anticipated as the best chance for Trammell and Morris, both of whom lasted the maximum 15 years on the ballot but did not receive the 75-percent vote needed for induction.

"The Detroit Tigers congratulate Jack Morris and Alan Trammell on their selections to the National Baseball Hall of Fame's 2018 Modern Baseball Committee ballot," the team announced in a statement. "Tradition and history are the foundation of this organization -- something that Jack and Tram spent many years building during their time wearing the Olde English 'D.' The two were teammates on the Tigers' 1984 World Series Championship Team and combined for 11 All-Star Game appearances. We're confident that the committee will see fit for Jack and Tram to be enshrined in Cooperstown."

Others on the ballot include fellow ex-players Steve Garvey, Tommy John, Don Mattingly, Dale Murphy, Dave Parker, Ted Simmons and Luis Tiant. Marvin Miller, longtime director of the MLB Players Association, rounds out the ballot.

Another former Tigers great, Lou Whitaker, was left off the ballot by the Hall's Historical Overview Committee, comprised of 11 veteran baseball writers and historians. Trammell had been hoping to be considered for induction alongside his longtime double-play partner, who lasted only one year on the BBWAA ballot and received votes on less than five percent of ballots.

A different committee, which will be announced later this fall, will vote on the ballot next month; a candidate must receive 75 percent of the vote for induction. Results will be announced on MLB Network at 6 p.m. ET on Sunday, Dec. 10.

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that five teams have contacted agent Scott Boras regarding the possibility of signing free agent starter Jake Arrieta.
Cafardo lists the Brewers, Twins, Blue Jays, Rockies and Rangers as the known teams but there could be more. The Cubs would surely like to have their ace back again next year. Arrieta and former Dodger and Ranger hurler Yu Darvish are the top arms on the free agent market. The 31-year-old Arrieta went 14-10 with a 3.53 ERA and 163 strikeouts in 168 1/3 innings this year. He turned in a 22-6 record and 1.77 ERA in a 2015 season that saw him win the National League Cy Young Award.

Jim Bowden of SiriusXM reports that six teams are "legitimately in" on Yu Darvish and there are "another handful that are staying close."
Darvish's season ended with a whimper in the World Series, but he's still arguably the top free agent this winter and might get paid the most. The Twins are one team known to have serious interest in the right-hander. Darvish posted a 3.86 ERA and 209/58 K/BB ratio over 186 2/3 innings for the Rangers and Dodgers in 2017.

This new ownership group has looked worse than Loria. Their payroll might be half of what it was last year. Virtually every move Jeter has made has looked bad, from firing a scout while he was in the hospital after he had surgery for colon cancer to having the old ownership fire Jeff Conine, Andre Dawson, Tony Perez, and Jack McKeon rather than do it himself to the way they've handled this Stanton situation. They have made it so Stanton's going to be a villain to either St. Louis or San Francisco if he refuses to waive his no-trade clause to one of those teams when they never should have gotten into advanced negotiations without Stanton agreeing he'd go there. In the long run this group could succeed but at this point they're making it clear that their #1 priority is making the team profitable.

I agree. And I really thought Jeter and his group would do everything possible to keep their stars and have some class.

Cannot believe the Yanks got Stanton. Sounds like Castro is a part of the deal so Gleyber Torres will play 2nd next year. Great move for the Yanks...would love to be rid of Ellsbury too.

People say this everytime a great hitter signs with a team. The Yankees should have the division on lock for a good while on paper but nothing is a certainty. Just ask the Angels.
