Ted Simmons was short by one vote. That is the one I don't get.

Yanks just got their payroll down to 170 million by trading Chase Headley to the Padres.

The Marlins fire sale continues -- Marcell Ozuna to the Cardinals pending a physical.

Sucks to see the firesale but Jeter is doing Miami right (even if it doesn't seem so) by making the team profitable again.

Not gonna happen without the in field product improving. Their payroll decreases thus far are nothing compared to their revenue decreases.

LOL, yeah... Jeets is a real genius giving away all their good players for peanuts. I'm sure it's just a coincidence the biggest fish of all got shipped to his Yankees. You really have no idea just how big of a joke Jeter has become in Florida these days if you think these are good moves. You do get how economics works, right? A shittier team drives down attendance and TV viewership even more. I never thought I'd say this but this new ownership group is as bad or worse than Jeffrey Loria.

It's not like Stanton was only going to the Yanks. Other teams were in play and he wouldn't waive his clause. Those 3 players had massive contracts.

Of course I understand economics but it's not going to be overnight. We might be looking at the new Oakland A's for now and build up the farm system.

The problem with the Stanton deal is the return, the yanks virtually gave away none of their top prospects to secure Stanton.

Previous Marlin teams would have these same fire sales but would net a return on prospects giving a chance to rebuild from within, and they did so winning a second championship after blowing up a previous championship team in 97.

All I see here is salary dumping, that's not going to make your team better in the future and will only provide temporary financial relief, but the loses will be ten fold when you have only 2,500 people in the stands. Jeter should of stuck to retirement imo, moves like this one show how wet under the ear he is and out of his element.

They're consistently one of the last teams for attendance when they had their great players, lol. All in all, we'll see what happens in 1-3 years.

Yup...and then they'll stockpile draft picks and in a few years, they could be scary again. Just look around baseball at some recent world series winners..the Royals and Astros both were dreadful and then acquired a lot of young talent and won the world series.

The Marlins aren't stockpiling great farm team players and picks. They're giving away their star players for peanuts. Jeter has no ****ing idea what he's doing.

well, you've got a couple choices. You can do what the old stale crappy management used to do and win a world series, blow up the team & suck for 5 or 6 years then rinse & repeat. OR you can tear the whole thing down lose 100+ games for 3-5 years while the farm system & re-built along with fan loyalty & trust then become a yearly contender such as the Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers, Cubs, Cardinals, Nationals. Choice #2 is the only way to go, because the stadium is empty because of choice #1.

You named like 6 of the top 10 payrolls as examples of rebuilding through drafts?

No, I named teams that the Marlins could be like if they invest in their future instead of doing tear-downs every 3 years. Bloated payroll means nothing anymore. Ask the Dodgers & Astros.

Miami is never going to be like the other teams you mentioned. The state of Florida, minus their NBA teams and the Tampa Lightning have never supported their franchises for prolonged periods of time. MLB and the NFL are the worst. Miami in particular has always had abysmal fan support outside of the Heat.

whatever. You're determined to think it's going to suck no matter what happens. And you must be pretty young or just ignorant not to know about the Miami Dolphins teams of the '70's. One of the biggest dynasties of that era along with the Steelers. I sure don't hope you consider yourself a fan. If you do, you're part of the current problem in Miami.

Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News reports that the Mets and Twins are showing interest in Mike Napoli.

Fraley points out that Napoli has connections to both franchises in general manager Thad Levine with Minnesota and manager Mickey Callaway with New York. He would give the Twins a designated hitter option and offer protection for Dominic Smith at first base. Napoli is 36 and batted only .193/.285/.428 in 2017, but he did sock 29 home and was playing through a torn ligament in his right hand, which he had surgically-repaired.

I'm not a Marlins fan or a Miami sports fan in general outside of the Canes. I'm a lifelong Braves fan, as I've stated many times. If the Marlins want to clown around that's fine by me. They're a division rival.

As for the Dolphins it's always been extremely fair weather as far as fan base goes. I'm in my late 30's. Been watching the NFL since I was around 10. I remember watching plenty of good Dolphins teams play with very good teams in the late 80's-90's and loads of empty seats. Do I remember the 70's? No, I'm not THAT old. They were very good in the early 70's. Post 1973 they didn't win a playoff game until 1982. Miami and Florida to a good degree's problem is the highly transient nature of the population. It's been that way for many decades and I can't see much changing.

So why are you complaining? Unless it's because the Marlins have 2 World Series trophies, and the Atlanta Braves have only one.
