Crazy how many huge free agents are still out there with pitchers and catchers reporting next week. It seems like the union really screwed up during the last CBA negotiations by focusing on lifestyle issues like days off rather than coming up with a way to force teams to spend more. Every team has a huge analytics department now and plenty of data that shows a big decline once players get into their mid-30s so teams don't want to sign players like J.D. Martinez until they're 36 or 37, but agents are still operating under the old standards where teams were willing to sign players to long contracts with the knowledge the player will be a sunk cost later on in the contract. It's going to be interesting to see if players like Martinez, Arrieta, and Darvish sign soon or continue to wait and hope for a better deal into March and potentially into the season.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports Yu Darvish can opt out after the second year of his agreed-upon, six-year deal with the Cubs.

In his six-year, $126 million deal from the Cubs, Darvish likely got less than he was originally aiming for, so the opt-out will give him an option to test the waters in a few years to see if they're any more friendly. His performance at the end of last season likely contributed to those icy waters, so two years of strong performance would help, too. With Darvish off the market, perhaps we start to see some other free agent starter dominoes fall, too.

Everyone talking about this is an overpay well of course it is. Most players are going to be overpaid. Johnny Cueto got $130 million for four years back in 2015; Zack Greinke got $207 million over six years that same year and David Price got $217 million over seven years. That's just the business of baseball.
As a Cub fan I'm fine with it because you're replacing Darvish with Arrietta who is going to get a similar contract and their everyday players are all under contract and pretty inexpensive. The Cubs are trying to win again and win now.

I bet the Giants no longer regret giving Zito all that money because despite being terrible for 95% of it, he finally put it together for one world series run at the end.of his contract. And in the end, I'm sure many teams would take that over sustained excellence and no championship even though financially that sounds ridiculous.

This is why I'm hoping the rumors of the Indians and Orioles having trade talks concerning Manny Machado are true. There's no question he'll only be a one-year rental for this season, but it would be so worth it to have an infield of Machado, Lindor, Ramirez and Alonso, with Encarnacion as DH. Now is the time for the Tribe to go for broke.

I'm looking at adding some new stadiums to my list this year. Nothing is close to being finalized, but right now it's looking like I'll hit both Chicago teams in one day (early August), and maybe a trip to Milwaukee some other time.

As to the free agent situation I'm surprised no one has picked up Tony Watson yet. I hope we can snag him. He's a great anchor in the bullpen.
