We won't dethrone the Astros for there division but a Wild Card is a very reachable goal.

As to the free agent situation I'm surprised no one has picked up Tony Watson yet. I hope we can snag him. He's a great anchor in the bullpen.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how Ohtani fares. I can't recall any situation in my lifetime where a starting pitcher pitches every 5 or 6 games and also bats in intervening games.

I was in a league here for a few years, but took some time off. But considering getting back into it this year.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports the Rays have traded Jake Odorizzi to the Twins.

No word yet on return. Just minutes before Topkin's report, Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan said he'd heard word of a deal between the clubs and linked the recently-DFA'd Corey Dickerson to the Minnesota club as well. His involvement has yet to be reported. Odorizzi's name swirled in trade talks all winter after he put up a 4.14 ERA and 1.24 WHIP over 143 1/3 innings last season, and the Twins have been known to be in the market for a starter all offseason as well. Stay tuned.

The Padres have entered the overpaying game with Eric Hosmer. 8 years and $140 million front-loaded, their biggest contract of all-time, exceeding Wil Myers deal.

Clearly the Padres didn't listen to Dave Cameron, who they hired last month from FanGraphs as a senior analyst. Cameron has been critical of Hosmer for quite some time and in November Cameron listed Hosmer as the #1 free agent landmine, writing:

“But a nice contract for this kind of skillset would be $80 or $90 million. I guessed that he’s actually going to get $125 million. Jon Heyman projected $160 million. At those kinds of prices, Hosmer could very easily become one of the most overpaid players in baseball, especially if he continues to just pound balls into the ground.

There’s enough youth and upside here that a team can rationally justify $20 million a year for four years, but once they pass either of those marks, they’d very likely be better off just signing one of the cheaper first baseman and throwing the difference at another quality free agent. Especially if the price gets up to $150 million; for that kind of money, you might be able to sign both Carlos Santana and Lorenzo Cain, and it’s not clear that Hosmer is definitively better than either one of those two, much less both of them.

It's only 1 year more at the price point he says would be right. Worst case, he falls off and they have 3 years left at a much lower cost. Best case, he plays great and opts out after that 5th year.

MLB.com's Jon Morosi reports that Logan Morrison has agreed to terms with the Twins on a one-year, $6.5 million contract with a vesting option for 2019.

Morosi hears the contract could be worth as much as $16.5 million over two years, and ESPN's Jerry Crasnick says Morrison has a "reasonable chance" at maxing out the deal. Morrison no doubt had eyes on a bigger contract after he batted .246/.353/.516 with a career-high 38 home runs in 2017 with the Rays, but he never gained much traction in the slow offseason market. He should be the Twins' main designated hitter and can also fill in at first

It's funny how Arrieta talked about how he wouldn't take a hometown discount with the Cubs and that's why they didn't sign him to an extension in 2016 or 2017. If he had taken that "hometown discount" he probably would have gotten at least $125 million. Outside of the Eric Hosmer deal Scott Boras has had an absolutely horrible offseason.

Mike Moustakas lost big with the Boras method. Rejects a $17.4 million qualifying offer, heads to free agency with the expectation that he'll never be a Royal again, re-signs with the Royals for a one year, $6.5 million contract with a 2019 option.

And then Boras, being the shyster that he is, tries to spin it as a system failure.
