Bauer has repeatedly said he was going after the last dollar in free agency with signing only one-year deals once he's eligible, so there was no way he was staying past the end of next season. After last season, he even went so far as to say on Twitter that the front office should trade him this year. What they acquired in this trade is far superior than a compensatory draft pick at the end of the first round if he just walked.
Puig is just here for the stretch run, but Franmil Reyes is going to be a 35-40 HR masher for the next 5-6 years. He's the big, RH, middle-of-the-lineup bat they've needed for years. Logan Allen was ranked as a Top 100 prospect this year and could wind up as a 4 or 5 starter in the rotation (and who knows with how the Indians have developed starting pitchers as of late...Bieber was projected to be a 4 or 5 and look how he turned out). I can't stand how cheap Dolan is (like most Indians fans, I've wanted him to sell for years), but the Antonetti/Chernoff front office is easily one of baseball's best. They deserve kudos for maximizing Bauer's value. |

I expected that with the luxury tax issue, they truly had one player to target and the other team no doubt knew that. Once the Astros made that move it really didn't matter. What I didn't expect though was the Yankees to wave the white flag with the Sox.

In Cashman's defense, teams were asking for a lot from the Yankees. Cashman isn't going to set back the farm system at least 5yrs just for this year.

Really bummed as a Yankees fan not getting anyone yesterday. This could certainly bite them this year. I'm not a fan of marching out a parade of relievers in the playoffs because when one of those relievers doesn't have it, there's no plan B that you can go to. That being said, the guys the Yanks have need to start performing. Tanaka, Happ and Paxton all need to be better or it will be another early exit in October for the Yanks.

Maybe, but all the ones that were "got" in the last 48 hours would have all been upgrades on what they have now. Don't get me wrong, I'm a lifelong yankee hater, but it seemed strange not having them grab everything in sight, just so other teams couldn't get them. That was the 70's-90's yankee mentality.

The Yankees don't grab everyone in sight anymore for 2 reasons...the first is that they do operate on a budget. Yes the budget is high but they're not going out there and spending 300 million dollars with the luxury tax on top of it. The second is that you need a farm system to win in baseball these days. They're not going to overpay and drain their farm system to bring in a starting pitcher that is not one of the best in baseball. Obviously the Blue Jays were never going to give the Yankees Stroman for a package that the Mets provided. They wanted top prospects from the Yanks. Greinke wasn't coming to NY and to be honest, I don't trust him in a big game playing in NY anyway. So with nobody great available, better to hold on to the prospects. Where I do blame Cashman is with the offseason pitching moves. Signing both Happ and Sabathia was a mistake. They're both soft tossing lefties who are way past their prime. Can't have 2/5 of your rotation be those two guys and it's more glaring when the ace of the staff in Severino hasn't thrown a single pitch all year. |

Nathan Patterson, 23, went viral throwing in the mid-90s at the speed pitch challenge booth at Coors Field. He has now been signed by Oakland. It didn't happen overnight as a lot of headlines make it out to be. The A's knew about him long before that. Petterson last pitched in high school.

Braves have done well with the waiver wire/free agents....
Adeiny Hechavarria: Never had more than 2 consecutive games with hits with Mets. Has had hits in 6 of his 8 games with the Braves (2 different 3 game streaks). Billy Hamilton: Game winning RBI hit in his second game. Francisco Cervelli: 3 2Bs and 5 RBIs in 34 games with the Pirates before getting a concussion in May. 2 2Bs and 3 RBIs in his first game with Braves (he should have had a third 2B, but they called it an error on Todd Frazier). |

Another odd baseball stat they keep track of....
The Diamondbacks have reached 60 consecutive games of being within two games of .500 (either above or below), beating the 2007 A's mark of 57 games. I wonder how keeping track of this two games above or below thing even came about. |
