As a die-hard Nats fan, I am very disappointed at the Lerner's statement they cannot afford both players. This is a large market and the team is getting a TON of money from the TV arbitration and now the WS victory. Not to mention they tried to keep both IN SEASON.

However, I never felt like Rendon was going to stay. He goes back to TX every chance he gets (even for a day in-between series) and I think Boras has him thinking he is the second coming of Mike Schmidt.

I will miss him but I have accepted he is gone for a long time now. But he will ALWAYS be loved in DC and I will always love him for what he did for us. When he comes back with whoever he signs with, he will get a standing O.

Well it was always going to take an insane contract to land him, imo they will be lucky if they manage to get 4 or 5 good years out of him but for them probably still worth it.

Simply amazing. Cole is a really good pitcher, but he's been in the league for 7 years with only two great seasons, no Cy Young awards. I would never give a pitcher more than a 5 year deal tops, forget 9 years with no trade clause. He already has a lot of wear, having entered MLB at 22. Seems like a deal that might work out ok for 3-4 years, then falls apart for the team. They're going to be in a tight spot when Judge is finally eligible for a huge deal.

Again you give Cole 7 years or you don't get him. It's like that for every SS FA.

God both Pitching contracts handed out this year are just ... dumb Cole is so not worth 36 million per year especially on the back end of that contract both teams gonna be crying near the end just like Detroit with Miggy

If either team brings home another WS trophy during the contract, they will not be crying. It will be worth it.

Sure they will. Yankees fans have a very short attention span. If they win a title in 2020, but none the next 5 years or so their fans will be screaming "what have you done for me lately." Massive, long term pitching contracts are almost always disasters for teams. I think the Yankees might be jaded by the Sabathia deal, which was an unusual example of such a deal working out for the team.

With the Nationals, I think expectations are generally lower. If Strasburg is a consistent All Star level ace, but they don't win another title their fans will be fine with the deal. They likely did that deal in part because it would have been tough explaining to their fans why they let their 2 best draft picks walk in back to back years, though we already see they were right letting Harper go.

Sabathia, Verlander, and Scherzer are the only pitching contracts I can see working out

They need a lot of pitching, like 3 starters. I really hope the Angels don't start trading their farm system because that hasn't worked out very well in the past. Apparently everyone except Jo Adell is available.

Trading Cozart + their prospect to the Giants was a great move salary wise and freed up quite a bit of space.

I hope they don't trade David Fletcher, only because I think LaStella's first half of last season isn't sustainable.

The Cozart trade was fantastic.

I agree that Fletcher is better - they should trade LaStella while there is some value there.

I would guess that they would want to sign a lefty or two since Rendon and Simba are there at 3B & SS. Groundball rates go up when they have a softer throwing lefty like Ryu or Keuchel.
