Baseball is done. I wouldn't be surprised if the season is called off by the end of next week. Bummer, was enjoying watching the young talent on the M's.

At least I still have garbage pickup Fridays to look forward to for a little excitement in my life.

This blows.

I'm not even bothering following the Yankees, or baseball this "season"..Seems pretty clear to me there shouldn't have been a season to begin with, but now with dozens infected I have to wonder how much longer they're going to wait before they take stop altogether.

I was enjoying seeing if the 4-2 Twins can continue to win with big bats and mediocre pitching lol.

MLB 2020 Season to possibly end Monday

Quote:
Major League Baseball’s season could be in jeopardy if teams and players can’t contain the coronavirus, commissioner Rob Manfred is warning, just a week after opening day.

And the shutdown could happen as soon as Monday.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Manfred sent this warning to the players union on Friday — at the conclusion of a week that’s seen the league ravaged by positive tests. The Miami Marlins and Philadelphia Phillies have their seasons on pause after a rash of positive tests. On Friday alone, six teams aren’t playing games because of the wide-ranging effects of players testing positive. The St. Louis Cardinals were the latest team impacted, with two positive tests announced Friday.

According to Passan, this weekend could be crucial for whether the season continues:

Should another outbreak materialize, Manfred, who has the power to shut the season down, could move in that direction. Multiple players briefed on the call fear that season could be shut down as soon as Monday if positive tests jump or if players continue not to strictly abide by the league's protocols.

State and local governments have pressured baseball about players skirting the mandates outlined in the league's 113-page operations manual, sources told ESPN. Broadcasts that have shown players not wearing masks, high-fiving and spitting have left government officials wondering how seriously players are taking the protocols, sources said.

At least 4 more memebers of the Cardinals organization have tested positive. I suspect the season could wind up being canceled any day now (Monday sounds possible but if it gets too bad, they may immediately pull the plug). I had fun with the games we did get, particularly during this week as the season has obviously been in trouble since the Marlins outbreak, so knew it may not last and to enjoy it while it does.

This has to be a real warning for the idea of an NFL season with a regular schedule and travel.

Wait, so after all this, the owner is blaming the union?

I didn't follow the infighting so much, so can someone with knowledge explain to me how it's the unions fault? lol

Well there seems to be some thinking that the union should've done more to get grown men to follow safe COVID-19 protocols.

Very unfortunate, season will definitely be cancelled for PR reasons. The NBA has shown the bubble concept is the only feasible way to keep both parties relatively happy, baseball should've tried harder to make it happen. While the games could obviously continue, the PR aspect of letting a team with a handful of positive tests continue to play will be the doom of the league. I give it to wednesday at the latest

What they should do, instead of postponing the games to be made up..just give the win to the team with the lesser of COVID cases. The fact I see Miami at the top of the division is pissing me off.

Eh, I just don't really care about this season because it's probably going to get canceled anyway. Helps that my team hasn't won a championship since 1991 lol.

One other thing is the union shot down the idea of playing in one or two cities with teams on lockdown during the season, unable to go out or even see families. But I feel like travel, as well as simple human nature (regular people are going to have slip ups, I keep thinking how here in NYC, regular people who mostly stayed home had a higher infection rate than the frontline doctors and nurses constantly being exposed, and the only explanation I can have is that the healthcare workers knew and followed all the precautions, and regular people are not going to be as careful), means there is going to be lots of cases in any open environment.

I do feel like professional sports should try and play if possible, but clearly a bubble is the best way to do it. And if not, you need huge flexibility in the schedule, maybe even a back up team roster which you are prepared to use at any time (I thought that’s what baseball would do with the 60 man roster, send out basically a AAA team in case of an outbreak on the main roster). Should be a real wake up call to the NFL, as their schedule has more travel, larger teams, and a sport with lots on contact and players close together in huddles.

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred remains confident the 2020 season can continue, telling ESPN's Karl Ravech on Saturday that "there is no reason to quit now" despite positive coronavirus tests that have led to the postponement of 17 games in 10 days.

"We are playing," Manfred told Ravech. "The players need to be better, but I am not a quitter in general and there is no reason to quit now. We have had to be fluid, but it is manageable."
He sure “quit” during the off-season when it came to that one team.

Yoenis Cespedes opted out today without telling anyone. Never showed up to the ballpark, security found his room empty, and then his agent told the Mets mid-game that he had opted out.

Ohtani has me worried, even more so than in the beginning of the season. I figured our pitching staff would be near the bottom, but man we don't really have anyone... we can't just outhit every team because we'll be up against a cy young candidate or all star pitcher every now and again, or a team full of near-all star starting pitchers like Oakland.

Giving up on Garrett Richards is also looking to be quite the mistake so far, even though he had so many years of injuries.
