I have to imagine they received better offers than this, inflation contrary to what the white house claims is running around 25-30% right now. This 700 million can literally be worth around 50 in 10 years at the rate we are going, this is a terrible deal for Ohtani which leads me to believe he just wants to be a Dodger, regardless because he is leaving a ton of cash in hand on the table!

I also imagine this deferred pay structure will come with deferred tax charges since it won't count as income until he gets it 10 years from now! I shutter to think how many tax increases the state of California will see within the next 10 years, Newsome has pretty much bankrupted the state and they are in for some hard times ahead. Ohtani's agent must hate him right now......
They still take the deferred value's present day value against the luxury tax, so $70 million annually would be the normal luxury tax hit turns into a $46 million annually luxury tax hit.

It gives them room to get about another $24 million annually player salary for 10 years (pretty good player) but it doesn't give them room for a $68 million annually player salary a year like you said, even though Ohtani is only getting $2 million actual dollars per year.

It gives them the room to sign that pitcher from Japan as they are now rumored to be the other choice besides the Yankees, and my money's on the Dodgers to land him.

I would just like to see MLB admit that the rules have been completely circumvented at this point, the luxury tax is no longer a deterrence if you can just structure contract's in a way to avoid it's full penalty. It will be interesting to see how many other teams start doing the same deferred payment approach as the Dodgers have done.

Probably not happening. Few players make the kind of off-field endorsement money and just as few want to risk deferring that level of money.

Ohtani wasn't the only one making money off endorsements.

There is a luxury cat treat company, Churu, from Japan that must have plastered their name and brand onto every souvenir at Angel Stadium, including souvenirs not related to Ohtani. I have a couple of mugs with the Churu branding (surprisingly nice mugs, as an aside) and it wasn't Ohtani mug night, it was just free souvenir mug night.

The Angels were estimated to bring in at least $15 million a year in new endorsements related to Ohtani.

I went to almost the last home game of the season vs the A's, Ohtani was injured, Trout was injured, half of the lineup was farm prospects (including the very good Nolan Schanuel), we'd already been eliminated from playoff contention... but there in the first-base side stands were loads of Japanese tourists who bought the good seats like me, and almost all of them followed the rules for the clear vinyl bags for belongings.

Angel Stadium was nearly sold out for a game that had no effect on the season versus the worst team in baseball. We had very good attendance numbers for such a bad year.

All of this goes away now that Ohtani is gone. We had a legitimate once in a hundred years meteor strike/shooting star on our team.

Today's OC Register had an article about the ad money flowing from Anaheim over to the Dodgers.

OC Register - Will huge ad money follow Shohei Ohtani from Angels to Dodgers?

Hate it that i'm right, but i seen this coming months and months ago. Yankee fans, Red Sox fans, Mets fans and even heard the Phillies were in on the ploy to pretend this guy was going anywhere but LA. I have listened to both New York & Boston fans on call in shows angry about why the Mets didn't go 10-350 or the Yankees didn't go to 400 or the Red Sox not even being mentioned in the final choices.

All these other teams had no shot from the start, same for Ohtani he was a Dodger the second the season ended back in October. I think it's absolutely horse crap that he is allowed to defer over 50% of any contract! We have had deferred contracts yes sure, but not for over 80% of the entire damn contract and also to skate the Luxury tax bill, and be able to streacht that luxury tax hit over 20 years instead of 10. This is called a loophole and well it sucks for all other fans from other teams imo.

Crazy they have not only signed pretty much all the top free agents of this off season but even made probably the most eye opening trade for a top player. My anticipation and excitement for the upcoming MLB season is about -144343324453342432345334323 right now....

No they blew past any point of Yankees free agent binge spending by almost a billion.

At this point the commissioner should just eliminate the luxury tax if they are not going to seriously enforce it. All it does is once again only hurt the low to middle end franchises as no player is going to take a sweetheart deal like Ohtani did for one of those teams making them the only ones really restricted by it.

Juan Soto struck out 3 times against Nasty Nestor Cortez. Yes yes…way too early but glad Nestor is healthy again after his injury.

Any thoughts on the NFL overtaking MLB as the new American pastime?

Anyone have any tips on how to find a decent fantasy baseball league to join?

I've been away from it for several years and wanted to get back into it this season. I had done the Yahoo leagues for a long time. Custom deep leagues rather than a random standard 12 team one. But there always seemed to be an issue where someone would either throw a fit about something out of the blue and waive all their players or most quitting by June.

I always wanted to find a ongoing league but any decent one would be fine though ideally I'd like a deep one.

Ah so that's what they must have been talking about on the Boomer and Gio show a few days ago that they could see the outline of a player's junk basically during an interview at spring training and laughing their asses off.

What a terrible idea, seriously who approves this stuff in MLB!

Likely interns and people with no playing experience. Honestly the players should choose and vote on the uniforms.
