I have no idea why Philly did not trade for Halladay and keep Lee for one year. That would have guaranteed them a spot in the World Series again. You just let Lee walk to free agency after the year. As a Braves' fan, that rotation would have struck fear into my heart.

Anyone heard anything on where Jim Thome is going? He can still be a productive DH. The A's should look into him.

The Phillies tried to trade for Halladay but they weren't willing to give up both Kyle Drabek or J.A. Happ and Dominic Brown. I agree that if they had Halladay and Lee in addition to their other pitchers they would be virtually unstoppable in the NL, but they weren't willing to give up that much of their future.

Yep I think this'll come back to bite them. I still think established franchise talent is worth more then trading for other peoples. So they could still lose the series, since they don't have another pitcher, not have the talent pan out. Where as with Lee, Halladay and Cole I don't know how they wouldn't make it back. But to think their rotation could compete with :

***IF healthy***

Beckett
Lester
Lackey
Dice-K
Buchholz

We already know they couldn't compete with a good yankees rotation and an out of sync bp. Now with Jaba having a primary position and not moving all over then pen, and in my op marte's emergence no way they compete with that.

He isn't a free agent until next year, and there is absolutely no way the Twins will trade him before opening day. They have a huge ad campaign going for their new stadium and Mauer is the face of it. It will be interesting to see what he does next year. He is from Minnesota and loves it there, but the Twins won't even be able to offer near as much as the Yankees or Red Sox. I would guess the Twins could offer something in the 7 years/$130 million range, and maybe not even that high. The Yankees might offer an A Rod sized contract, and maybe even bigger than that. A $300 million offer isn't out of the question. Mauer is only going to be 27 when he becomes a free agent and likely hasn't hit his prime. Still, Mauer has never shown a desire to be a megastar like A Rod and might decide he's set for life regardless so he should go somewhere where he's happy.

Yeah if he makes it to free agency I figure most markets like the twins will offer 100-160. But then the big boys will get in and probably like you said take to 200-300. Since he is only 27

Kinda bummed about the Dodgers getting rid of Juan Pierre. I really liked him.

I think there is little chance that Joe Mauer remains on the Twins after free agency. He will most likely command an A-Rod level deal, and only a few teams in baseball can really afford that.

Yeah, he'd be dumb as hell to turn down 200-320 million and secure a family forever. then get like 90-160 and stay put.

lol even Antoine Walker blew thru 100 million in 12 years.

It all could come down to whether Mauer wants to leave his home state. He could sign a 5 year deal for around $100 million and still hit free agency again when he was 32. He's set for life regardless of whether he makes $100 million or $300 million. He's not like Antoine Walker. He doesn't have a massive entourage that he supports, doesn't have dozens of cars and numerous houses, and doesn't lose hundreds of thousands at casinos. You also need to remember how low the cost of living in Minnesota is. He can build a massive mansion there for $3 million if he wants with hundreds of acres of land. I'm not saying he will stay, I'm just saying he hasn't given any indication that he will definitely leave.

Yanks lost Matsui and might lose Damon

Is Johnson the solution ? Johnson as DH ?

I know he isn't like that, I'm just saying at 100 million its still very possible to lose it. I think he'd be smart enough to survive on that 100 , but at 200-300 I just don't see how you turn that down.

Yeah, I had a ton of time to watch him here in DC and even with little help, he was quite a good hitter. NOW with that being said it never translates perfect to the American League, but if you got him don't be shocked if he's quite good.

Cubs traded Milton Bradley to the Mariners for Carlos Silva. As a Cubs fan I'm glad Bradley is gone, he could never handle the Chicago media and any casual baseball fan knew that when he signed, as well as the fact that he had to go to the AL so he could DH 50 games a year, but the Cubs management somehow didn't realize this.

Isn't he the guy who injured himself trying to get in the umps face? That was hilarious (unless he was on your team).

Yeah, late in the season he tore his ACL arguing with an umpire when he was with the Padres. That was the year the Padres blew their division lead and lost a one-game playoff to the Rockies. The umpire had said something obscene to Bradley and he was restrained while yelling at him. MLB ended up suspending the umpire for the remainder of the season, including playoffs.
