Well I ended up being dead wrong there. Somehow Boston rallied to pull it out. The Yankees might have a real case for protesting that game.

Toef explained it well in an earlier post. Doubt the protest goes anywhere but it's worth a shot for the Yankees.

Weird situation in the bottom of the 5th...

Beckett gave up a 2 out double to Cano, which added two more runs to the Yankees score. Magically after that, the Red Sox pitching coach came out and claimed Beckett was injured, so they were allowed to bring in a reliever, who had all the time he needed to warm up (he previously hadn't been warming up in the bullpen).

Girardi complained about it, and it seems like the Yankees are playing out the rest of the game under protest. They're probably going to win anyway, but if they did indeed file a protest, I guess it's up to the AL President to determine the winner of the game. Not sure how it works.

If the League President upheld the protest the game would be restored in the 5th inning when Beckett left. A protest hasn't been upheld since 1986, and that occurred because the umpires had improperly called a game due to rain in the 6th inning, so I would be shocked if anything comes of this protest. Usually when a protest is denied MLB does not explain the decision. The Yankees protested a game last year against the Marlins due to a substitution mistake by the Marlins but it was denied.

Couldn't believe it, Rivera blew another one (Joba didn't help). He's still the man, though - but possible signs of declining performance? Didn't he just give up a grand slam the previous series? I can only hope, haha. Pap doesn't look very good, though.

Yeah man, he's got me nervous. He keeps reminding me of Keith Foulke, who went from lights out to worthless. I hope he can turn things around.

Just got back from Toronto. Jays split a 2 game set with the Twins.

Sat behind the plate Monday night against the Twins in the Expensive seats AKA In the Action Seats... was an awesome view of the game, glad I got to do it once. Something I always wanted to do. Funny, everyone but me in that section were all texting the whole game and hardly paying attention... silly rich people! I don't think I blinked once haha. LOVED IT!

Go Jays! Jose Bautista AL Player of the Week. Jays still leading in HRs and Extra Base Hits.

I have a hard time believing the Red Sox pitching could really be THIS bad. Despite problems at the plate this year from a few guys like Ortiz the Red Sox offense has a very solid 210 runs in the first 40 games. That's more than the first place Rays have scored and not far from the Yankees 225 runs.

But the Boston pitching staff has given up nearly 5.5 runs per game. I have to believe guys like Lackey, Matsuzaka and Beckett will come around eventually.

Never say never Unlikely... yes.

It's weird... Hill, Lind and Overbay are well below where they should be for homers(all having terrible years thus far) and somehow they lead the league in homers as a team. Pretty neat.

Also have a pretty decent record for a team suppose to win 65 games :P

Ya really. I was sure Toronto would finish last in the AL East this year, even below Baltimore.

San Diego seems like fool's gold to me. Their pitching has given up only 118 runs in 39 games, second lowest in MLB. That staff is average at best. No way they can keep it going for much longer.

Nice pics, but the Rays really need to get out of that dome. It looked like it was a nice partly cloudy day, and I'd love to take the afternoon off to go see a ball game, but I'd hate to be sitting inside that dome to do it.

I couldn't believe they were blowing a 5 run lead for the 2nd day in a row. But I was holding out hope that they might take it back in the 9th for a 2nd day in a row. Unfortunately that didn't happen.

Yeah, it's kind of a bummer that there is a rule for this, and it almost always gets denied. In most cases it's probably irrelevant to the outcome of the game, so in a way I can see why it happened. But in the Beckett case yesterday, there's no telling what could've happened with the next batter, and a runner in scoring position. Maybe he'd get the out, maybe he wouldn't. I guess we'll never know.

Rivera hasn't had dominating stuff these past few appearances, but I wouldn't completely blame him for yesterday. Thames dropped an easy out, that arguably lost them the game.

I'm not sure how Papelbon has been doing this season, but it seems like him and Rivera don't do as well against each other's teams as they do against the rest of MLB. I imagine that's somewhat related to being division rivals who play a lot against each other, and generally play close games where the closers are needed (as opposed to when they play other divisional opponents like the O's).
