Better sweep that series!!!

PS Have I mentioned how much I hate the AL playing the NL?

Kind of gagged that the Jays are set to play the Cardinals, Phillies, Giants and Padres in the upcoming weeks... 4 of the top NL teams... the scheduling is extremely unbalanced when it comes to inter-league play. Mind you the Jays will also play the Rockies but thats' only 1 weaker team. Cool to play the best teams of course but every team should play the same team the same number of times in inter-league IMO.

Anyway, the novelty is over for me. Down with inter-league. It's stupid.

Have I mentioned it too?

Yankees play the Mets... apparently people care about the Subway series.

The punishment for everyone else is completely arbitrary inter-league match-ups. So stupid.

I absolutely hate inter-league play. Always have, probably always will. I also liked baseball pre-1994 when we had only four divisions. The Wild Card is one of the worst things to ever happen to baseball.

Yeah, I'd prefer that they just cut out the divisions, and just go with the AL and NL, top 4 teams from each move on.

But because of the savings on traveling, and the chance to build divisional rivals (read: build fan interest), I can kind of see why they may never change from the current structure.

And psychologically, if your team is the crappiest team in the league, if they're at least put into a division, being in 5th place doesn't look as bad as 14th or 16th.

If they are going to keep the playoffs with 8 teams including 2 wildcards they should really make every round best of 7. I HATE best of 5 divisional series.

I have no problem with the wild card. It makes the game more accessible to fans of teams that have no chance against the powerhouses. Even if it is a false sense of hope when they actually get in the playoffs.

The 15 NL Wild Card winners are 8-7 in the divisional round, and 2 have won the World Series.

In the AL, it's the exact same... 8 past the first round, and 2 won the World Series.

Wild Card winner might be the best title to enter the playoffs with, other than AL East Champion.

I was just thinking.....if anyone should be liking the wild card right now, it would be Yankee fans.

Ya, two years ago was similar. Yankees finished a few games back of Tampa but won the Wild Card.

And the fact that the first round is best of 5 rather than 7 makes upsets far more likely. In that sense teams like NY are hurt by the best of 5 first round.

Yeah, one of the things I hate most about a 5-game series is that it doesn't require a team to have any depth to win. All you need are 2 good pitchers, and you win... or at least are as good as any other team.

Although I guess the Diamondbacks proved in 2001 that you can win a 7-game series with just 2 good pitchers.

Haha, maybe. Or maybe Boston fans (just not this year). I just wanted to point out that WC teams have won more than 1/4 (but close enough... 4/15) of the World Series championships since the Wild Card began... which is about all you can ask for, considering they represent 1/4 of the playoff spots.

Gawd that team was horrible outside of Johnson and Schilling. That D-Backs team wouldn't have won more than 65 games without those two.

Funny thing is the teams I consider to be the least talented WS champions in my lifetime are the 2001 D-Backs and 2003 Marlins. And both beat vastly superior Yankee teams in the World Series on the backs of a couple unhittable pitchers- namely Schilling, Johnson and Beckett.

Schilling always gets the credit for the 2001 World Series but Randy Johnson was the real MVP of that series. Johnson won games 2 and 6 of the series going 16 innings giving up only 2 runs then came back for game 7 on 1 day rest to shut down the Yankees in the 9th inning for his third win.

As a Braves fan I also hated 2001. Randy Johnson did the same thing to the Braves in the NLCS. He annihilated us in his two starts. Game 1 he threw a complete game three hit shutout and game 5 he threw 8 innings giving up just two runs to close out the series. Schilling also won his lone start of the series against Atlanta.
