No, I agree with you! Ruth was the best and is the biggest name in sports, even today! Ruth > Jordan or Ali!
Uh no. You can go anywhere in the world and Jordan and Ali people will recognize those name. Babe Ruth, I don't think so.

Polling who, the general public? The general public is so ill-informed and shortsighted I'll bet A-Rod, McGwire or Bonds would win.

The true answer is Ruth. The only active player who has any chance at coming close to Ruth as greatest hitter is Pujols. Even A-Rod doesn't have numbers as consistently great as Pujols.

Sports Illustrated's 10 Unbreakable Baseball Records (in no particular order)

1. Cy Young's 511 Wins
2. Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak
3. Ty Cobb's .366 lifetime batting average
4. Rickey Henderson's 130 stolen bases in a season
5. Babe Ruth's .690 lifetime slugging percentage
6. Barry Bonds' 232 walks in a season (2nd best that season was 127)
7. Nolan Ryan's 5,714 career strikeouts (nobody else even broke 5,000)
8. Jack Chesbro's 48 complete games in a season
9. Ted Williams' .482 lifetime on-base percentage
10. Hank Aaron's 25 All-Star Game appearances

For reference, I looked up the 2nd best for each...

1. 417 by Walter Johnson
2. 47 by Willie Keeler
3. .358 by Rogers Hornsby (among modern players, Pujols is the highest at .334)
4. 118 by Lou Brock
5. .634 by Ted Williams
6. 170 by Babe Ruth
7. 4,875 by Randy Johnson
8. no idea
9. .474 by Babe Ruth
10. 24 by Willie Mays and Stan Musial

Descriptions of each, including a picture, are available here:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mul...content.1.html

My favorite useless baseball stat is that Babe Ruth hit 14% of all home runs hit in the Majors in 1927. For a player to hit 14% of the home runs hit in 2009, they would've needed 651. Even taking into account that there are about twice as many teams in 2009 as in 1927, would still result in over 300 HRs. Ruth was an aberration.

Of that list #1, 7, 8 are 100% guaranteed to NEVER be broken. Pitchers nowadays don't start more than about 35 games total, so 48 complete games is literally impossible.

Of those records only Aaron's 25 All-Star appearances has even a remote chance of being broken in my lifetime. And I only say that because the fans do the voting (and vote for fan favorites over talent) and players having longer careers these days.

I don't know, Prince Fielder has the current longest active games streak with 230 games, I see no reason why a 300 hundred pound first baseman couldn't play every game for the next 15 years.

Miguel Tejada actually had a 1,152 games played streak from 2000 to 2007. Ironically his streak ended when he broke his wrist hitting while playing for the Baltimore Orioles.

Considering how much he and his old man seem to hate one another my guess is his streak ends when they get in a fistfight.

That's another good one. If they went up to 11, I'm sure it would've been included.

Yeah, the pitching ones have no chance of being broken.

I never really thought of DiMaggio's record as being unbreakable, just that it'd require a ton of luck. Cobb's career BA, Ruth's career slugging, and William's career OBP are all insane, and I can't imagine them being touched.

Ryan's K record is pretty impressive as well, considering someone like Randy Johnson didn't even come close, despite having a pretty lengthy career.

Most of the hitting records I have a hard time believing are unbreakable given how much offense in MLB fluctuates over the longrun. MLB history is littered with both deadball eras and extreme offense eras. Eventually you hit a very pro-offensive era where records thought to be unbreakable are broken.

I seriously doubt Henderson's stolen base records will be broken in my lifetime. But ya never know, we could hit another deadball era someday that causes a spike in base stealing.

Yankees picked up a 1-0 win over the Twins in the first game today (they were finishing up yesterday's game).

Rivera didn't look too good in the 9th. First batter nearly hit a HR, but somehow it stayed in the park, and Russo tracked it in on the warning track.

Second batter got walked.

Third batter, got lucky, grounded into a DP.
