James A. Joyce III (October 3 1955 - June 2, 2010) is the very worst umpire in Major League Baseball who has worked in the American League (AL) from 1987 to 1999 and throughout both major leagues since 2000. He attended Bowling Green State University. He wears uniform number 66 (he wore uniform number 6 while in the American League). His strike call is extremely loud and enthusiastic, similar to that of now-retired umpire Bruce Froemming.

Blown Call
On June 2, 2010, Joyce made a controversial call at first base which would have given Armando Galeragga of the Detroit Tigers a perfect game.

Ahh come on. I mean that was probably the worst call I've ever seen, but Jim knows he blew it. I feel bad for him to be honest with you, I would be willing to bet he was nervous before he made that call, you don't want to blow a call either way with a perfect game on the line. The way the Tigers players reacted after the game was completely unacceptable as well. Tigers players were in his face yelling at him, and had to be held back.

Trust me, I was rooting for Galarraga just like anyone else, but Joyce made a mistake (an awful one..but still), once he gets home and sees the replay, nobody on this Earth will feel worse than him.

How do you blow it that bad? Even if it's a super close play, you still call him out in that situation! I feel terrible for that pitcher.

If I were a Tigers teammate I'd be in his face too. The game was 3-0 with a perfect game on the line. Seems like common sense that unless he 100% sure the runner beat him he should not have made that call. I guess he thought the Tiger player didn't touch the bag, though I cannot imagine why he would think that when you could see he was out from every angle.

They are professional athletes, you need to know how to be able to compose yourself.

Now really, I'm not arguing whether this one was a close play or not. CLEARLY it was not a close play. I don't know why Joyce ruled him safe, but my guess is right after he made the call he knew he was wrong. I feel terrible for Galarraga because he earned it, that was his PG, but I feel bad for Joyce as well because one simple call has plagued his entire career.

On another note... Jays Vs Rays... defensive game on the year! Some increbidle D by both teams. No matter what the outcome tonight... The Jays are on the up and up... good to see!

It sucks David Price has allowed 0 ERs and they are still losing 2-1 going into the 9th!

Upton, Crawford and especially Langoria are to thank that it's 2-1 in the 9th for sure. Some amaizng plays... hats off to them.
