What a crazy day in the MLB?

* Ken Griffey Jr. retires
* Dodgers/D-Back had a 14 inning affair
* Stolen perfect game
* Rays come back to win in the 9th
* Padres win on a grand slam in the 11th over the Mets

God, I <3 baseball!

I was getting really bummed out after the Magic were eliminated from the NBA playoffs. Felt bad knowing all there is left in baseball forthe next several months. Today's MLB events were a nice pick me up.

Oh and you forgot to mention I opened a cold one at 7:05 Est to enjoy the Pirates and Cubs. Three hours later, with a warm drink, the PA announcer officially stated the game would not be played.

Pardon me, sir, the first thing that popped in my head after reading your post was along the lines of you being an ass|-|ole for pointing out the Rays thing. I thought they just beat down the Jays, didn't realize til NOW that Toronto blew ANOTHER lead.

****.

So, my apologies and such. It coulda been anybody.

After watching the replay of the blown call in real time over and over, I don't see why people think it was "not even close". It's certainly a close play. Obviously in slow motion it's clear it was the wrong call, but umpires don't watch the game in slow motion.

No idea why he got the call wrong, but some observations:

1) Galarraga caught the ball in a weird way, and even after finishing the catch, had the ball in the upper part of the webbing. Maybe the way he was pulling his glove in confused the ump, thinking he was still making the catch.

2) Cabrera probably should've let the 2b'man take that grounder. Instead of a spin throw that obviously had less velocity on it, the 2b'man could've made a stronger throw to first, making the play much easier to call. Obviously everyone on the field wanted to do everything they could to help make that last out, so I don't blame Cabrera for playing the ball.

I hope Selig does something about the outcome of the game, but I'm not counting on it.

I'd rather have this sort of situation than the reverse.

Galarraga will always be remembered as the guy who was robbed of a perfect game. It may not be in the official record books as a perfect game, but I think he can rightfully feel that he pitched one, and fans know he did.

In the reverse scenario, if the runner was actually safe, and was called out, we'd have a guy in the record books forever, who didn't deserve to be there. So in that sense, I can see why Joyce felt pressured to make the right call, and seemed to think that meant calling the guy safe.

~~~~
Sidenote: 3 perfect games in 1 season. Time to bring back steroids.
Edit: To expand on above, the reason I don't expect Selig to do anything is that it'd set a bad precedent. Galarraga pitched a perfect game. I know that, the Detroit fans know that, the ump knows that, everyone knows that. But the only thing reversing the call will do is put Galarraga's name in the record books, which may not be worth the can of worms it will open up about retroactively correcting bad calls. It would've been nice to see the Detroit players run after Galarraga on the 28th out, and carry him off the field. I'm sure the crowd would've given him the proper ovation, and he would still somewhat get the experience of pitching the perfect game. Instead, his teammates felt a need to go after Joyce, and now even if the outcome were corrected, Galarraga will never get to experience the celebration after the game.
That blown call is going to lead to instant replay being used on more than homerun calls. You can take that to the bank. That was one of the worst calls I have seen this year. Usually you live with it, but it takes away from what could have been a historical moment.
The call should have been made, but Cabrera should have never fielded the ball. As someone that has watched him over his career, he simply is one of the worst fielding firstbasemen in the game. Great hitter, but looks lost and awkward in the field. The throw is what I think threw the play off. A better fielder makes a crisper throw in that situation, not a cut-fastball that was tailing away from Armando when he reached the base. It should never have been as close as it ended up being.
I'm pretty bummed about Griffey retiring. I knew it was going happen sometime during this season with the way he's been hitting but it's still sad to see it official. He was probably my favorite player during my lifetime. One of the prettiest swings ever! Gonna miss you Jr.
I read on the Chicago Tribune site at 8:30 ET that the game had officially been postponed and would be made up at a later date. I don't know why they didn't make the game up today (Thursday). Both teams are off and it's not supposed to rain until late afternoon so they could have had a noon start and got the game in. Guess I get to wait a couple days to watch Zambrano's return to the starting lineup.
Yep, he's one of the best. I was trying to get in touch with his attorney all day yesterday on an unrelated matter, and now I know why he wouldn't call me back. LOL
The Kid was one of the best.
Re: the blown perfect game -- feel so bad for everyone involved. If nothing else, it'll get us instant replay (or a better version of it).
Was never a Griffey fan, but he was a great player and gave his all. He never got in any trouble and was a good teammate and leader. He's the only modern day player in the top 15 all-time home run list that I'd put in the hall. I'd never put Sosa, Bonds, Palmeiro, McGwire, Manny, or A Rod in the hall due to their steroid use, and don't feel that Jim Thome has been a good enough player.
Not to mention he was hurt SOOOOOOOOOOOO much, I figure he'd be much higher on stat lists had he not been plagued with injuries.
Sad day I loved griff
Oddly, I was considering going to a Jays game this season to catch Griffey. Too bad.
As a life long Tiger fan, I am still freaking out about that call. I feel bad for Armando and the whole team since I think they wanted it for him more than he wanted it for himself. I also feel bad for the ump since he obviously feels horrible.
Is it possible for MLB to change the call? I only ask since it was the last out of the last inning.
