Who knew picking up Glaus would be the biggest offseason move the Braves made. He went 4 for 5 with another 2 HR today and he's on pace for 33HR/124RBI.

Yeesh, so much for the Twinkies having one of the best pitching staffs in baseball.

The Pirates have now lost eight in a row. They dropped to close 4-3 games in a row in Detroit, and will now head back to Pittsburgh to let Brad Lincoln take the mound. Although the games weren't Ws in Detroit, there were some bright spots. Jose Tabata was brilliant...in Saturday nights game Tabata turned a routine single into a double by taking a risk to get into scoring position. Tabata then stole third, becoming the tying run.

The Pirates will face the White Sox on Tuesday at 7:05 Est at PNC Park. Brad Lincoln will get the ball for the Bucs, and there is a very slight possibility, even though nothing has been announced yet, that Alvarez may be in the lineup. It has been rumored that Alvarez may get the callup for the homestand this week, although nothing is for certain.

Anyone watching the Cubs/Sox game? No hitter on both sides in the 7th!

EDIT: Back to back hits by the Cubs, 1-0 Cubs! The White Sox are being no hit going into the 8th!

I still think the Rays are a better ballclub unless the Yankees make a move, which they probably will. Either way they are both likely to make the playoffs with one winning the division and one the Wild Card. Reminds me a lot of 2008, only this year I think both the Rays and Yankees are better than they were then.

Completely agree! They are most likely to meet in the ALCS!

AL East: Rays
AL Central: Twins
AL West: Angels
AL Wild Card: Yanks

I know the Rays have been playing some bad baseball (8-11 since the 5 game road trip to NY/Hou), but they will rebound!

Bring on Chad's Braves!

I sure hope so. I'd love for Bobby Cox's final season to end in the World Series. Outside of NYY I'd keep an eye on Minnesota. I really think that team has the makings for a championship run. They really have built an impressive young team.

Though I was happy the Braves took 2 of 3 against the Twins. It still doesn't make up for 1991 though.

With Posada being my favorite player, it was pretty cool to see him get a curtain call today.

Phil Hughes is continuing his surprisingly good season, picking up his 9th win, to put him in a tie for 1st in the AL. It's great that on a day where he can give up 5 runs, he can still get away with a win (though to be fair, 4 of those 5 came after he crossed the 100 pitch mark, and he probably shouldn't have been in the game still, with how slow it was dragging on).

Haha, no way. Yankees will take the AL East.

The Rays have had a ridiculous record on the road, which probably won't hold up over the rest of the season. They're surprisingly average at home (22-8 on the road, 18-15 at home).

I'd almost want the Rays to win the division, so they can have home field advantage, which clearly doesn't help them this year.

Weird that when you hear discussion about the best catchers of the past couple decades you never hear Posada's name. I'm 29 and been watching baseball since I was 7 and Posada is possibly the second best catcher after Pudge I've ever seen. He really should be a first ballot HOF'er but I fear he may not be since he doesn't put up jawdropping numbers.

This is just a random baseball question out of leftfield... but I started thinking about a 3B charging a bunt and barehanding it to make the throw to first. I was thinking about that motion, picturing it in my head and envisioning the difficulty of the throw across my body when it occurred to me that I would never be able to play 3B because I throw lefthanded.

So does anybody know how each infield position typically throws? Are lefties also at a disadvantage at SS/2B? Does it matter at all for the catcher/1B?

^3-min vid of SportsCenter's top 10 plays from yesterday... 8 are baseball (several NCAA), but there are some real web gems here.

In general, if you're left-handed, you are relegated to the following positions:

-first base
-pitcher
-outfield

As a fellow lefty, I became an outfielder at an early age, because first base seemed boring to me. In Little League (when it didn't really matter) I played a little bit of shortstop, but by my teens I was in the outfield for good. I hated pitching.

Some people might take it even further, and say that lefties should not play right field, because on balls hit down the line, it's crucial for a right handed player to be able to lean down and scoop the ball to his left, and then come up firing right away, if a runner is trying to score. For a lefty, they'd have to either back hand it (tricky), or somehow run past it it so they can scoop it the normal way.

Left handed catchers don't really exist, because right handed batters have always been more common (or at least, I imagine they still are), so that creates a bit of a problem with throwing out people trying to steal. Sure, there's always the batter interference rule, but a left handed catcher will still generally have to sidestep to the right before throwing to second, and take a huge sidestep to the left to try to throw someone out at third. Also, when blocking the plate on a runner trying to score, it's much easier for a right handed catcher to catch a ball with their left hand and swipe to the left (since the runner coming from third is to their left) than for a lefty catcher to try to swing their right hand across their body for a tag.

All the infield positions (other than first base) are difficult for the reason you mentioned. Second base is obviously the most difficult, due to the amount of turning it'd require, to make a throw to first. For a second baseman, any ball hit to their right is easy to glove as a lefty, but difficult to throw (since you'd have to turn a lot). Any ball hit to their left is difficult to glove (they'd have to backhand it), but the throw is somewhat easier after that. For a righty, the easier plays to glove are also the easier ones to throw (balls hit to their left), and the harder ones to glove are the harder ones to throw (balls hit to their right), so it works out well for them that the two harder things to do go together, instead of always having something hard about every play.

At first base it's kind of a toss-up, but I think lefty first basemen are maybe a little bit better, because when holding a runner on they can make a quicker tag on pickoffs.

One other idea (which I imagine is somewhat true, but doesn't account for everything) is that if you're a lefty, at some point a manager is going to try to get you to be a pitcher (which is why you don't see them playing many other positions).

Only the 4th player to ever do that, what a fantastic first at-bat that was! Hell, first pitch...GONE! That guy has spent years in minor leagues, too, so I'm sure he was blown away by it all.
