Gotta spread the wealth though. The allstar game brings big bucks along with everything else. The Royals are in serious need of any sort of boost to help their club. Good choice for the game.

If they awarded it to Boston(who was on the table for the 2012 game) it would have been upsetting, sure it's 100 years of Fenway but they already had the game in 1999.

KC was one of the great teams of the past and a great baseball city. They even had Bo Jackson at one time hahah... also I believe they hosted the AllStar game in the late 80s(EDIT sorry i was wrong on this, they haven't hosted in a longer time). .. and some WS wins to boot. They are very deserving of the All Star game in 2012.

Key word here is "Was." The Pirates were also a great franchise at one time. Doesn't mean they havn't been completely irrelevant like the Royals nearly two decades. Kansas City is nowhere close to being a great baseball city anymore.

I think we agree that MLB has some issues when once proud teams are now totally overlooked and forgotten.

Yes, and it mostly comes down to $$$. Kansas City could compete back in the 70's and 80's when player/team salaries were at a reasonable level. But those teams will never compete with NY, Boston, Philly, etc. without a salary cap.

Though even without a salary cap there is no excuse for how bad KC has been for so long. Even small market teams "should" be able to field a competitive young team once or twice per decade.

It's doesn't really matter if the team is bad, it's more about if the stadium is suitable to host an all star game! Last time I checked PNC Park was one of the best looking parks in the MLB! (BTW, I've been to PNC Park twice)

If anyone is wondering why he was miked (or mic'ed?), it's because of a documentary called Playing For Peanuts, which followed this minor league team for a season.

I'd like to think he didn't put on a show just for the documentary, but who really knows?
