It's that simple, really. You're making it more complicated than it needs to be.

That's pretty much it. Letting stiffs from garbage teams like the Kansas City Royals and Pittsburgh Pirates in an "All-Star" (exhibition) game determine who gets home-field advantage in the World Series is the height of insanity.

There is going to come a time as I stated before when a team that won 90 games during the regular season is going to have homefield over a team that won 105 games during the regular season in the World Series because that league won the ASG and I hope it happens soon because that seems to be the only way to get Pud Selig to react when something disastrous happens.
What is so "right" about it though?

I agree that home field advantage should go to the "best" team, but how do you determine that? That's been my point all along, because going solely on record doesn't mean anything.

Take an example unrelated to win/loss records.

Throw A-Rod down in Single A, and Ryan Howard leave in MLB, as extremes, to illustrate the point.

After 100 games, A-Rod hits 40HRs, Ryan Howard hits 20.

A-Rod is the better home run hitter, because 40 > 20.

You can't compare numbers in baseball if the numbers are not measuring the same thing. 1 win in the NL is not necessarily equivalent to 1 win in the AL. 1 win in the AL West isn't necessarily equivalent to 1 win in the AL East.

Sure the parity between the NL and AL isn't as bad as between MLB and Single A, but the point remains that win loss records, by themselves, are not the perfect solution that others are making it out to be.

My argument was never that the ASG way is better, just that it makes about as much sense, when you think about it. Which is to say, they both kind of make sense, but neither way is clearly perfect. If the goal is to allow a team to have control over whether they earn home field advantage or not, we need a new method.

So far nobody is really providing any arguments in support of the record method, other than "dude, it's clearly better".

And if the 90-win vs 105-win thing happens, the only way anyone will throw a fit over it is if it goes to Game 7, and the 90-win team wins. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that to happen. And if the 90-win team sweeps the 105-win team, should that be used as a supporting argument for the ASG method? Because those 90 wins came in what's clearly the better league, so they're arguably worth 120 wins in the 105-win team's league.

You're forgetting a certain aspect of the All-Star game, which is that the coaches from last year's WS teams coach the All-Star game.

Unless something crazy happens (like a Marlins firesale in the off-season) both coaches have every reason to think they should be back in the World Series the following season, and know the supposed importance of home field advantage (even though WS rarely go past game 5).

So sure, a few Joe Schmoes are forced into the All-Star game, but at a crucial spot in the game, I doubt their manager relies on them.

But they really don't seem to care about winning very much. They care more about letting all the players get in an inning or two and conserving their energy. If they did care about winning what earthly reason would Charlie Manuel have for selecting guys like Omar Infante or Joe Girardi for selecting Elvis Andrus for their team?

I have no idea why either of those guys were picked, nor do I know much about their seasons, so I can't really say. But I don't think it's true to say the managers don't care at all. Sure, maybe they won't lose sleep if they lose the game, but I think both of them want to win the game.

In any case, I'm done trying to argue in support of the ASG method. There are plenty of reasons I dislike Selig, but the ASG=WS home-field advantage isn't among them.

Time to get back to the Yankees. These West Coast road trips were fun when I was in college and enjoyed seeing a live game on late at night after finishing up some schoolwork. But now, not so much.

Hope the fan that fell at the Ranger game will be ok. Sounds like it was a pretty high fall.

Grand slam for A-Rod. Yankees up 5-1 in the 3rd. A-Rod's now 4 HRs away from 600.

Would be bittersweet if he did what that Angels hitter did earlier this year while rounding the bases on his 599th. At his age a severe enough broken limb would probably end his career.

Solo-shot for A-Rod. 3 more to 600.

I'm unaware of this story. What happened exactly? Guy fell down, broke his leg?

Angels hitter blasted a walk-off HR and broke his leg in 3 places while rounding third, I believe.

That sucks. I wonder if he already had fractures in his leg, and they finally just snapped, or what exactly. I can't imagine he was stomping on the ground that hard.

My guess(since I don't have an exact recollection) is that he got too cute going around third and pretty much went flying through the air and landed awkwardly on his leg.
