But i'm a big ball fan in general and will always love my Blue Jays no matter what.

I just don't understand why the Yankees are willing to give up their best prospect for a 3 month pitcher rental when they just won a World Series with their current staff. You only need a 3 man rotation in the postseason and the Yankees already have 4 great starters. Why give up 20-year old Jesus Montero, your top prospect, to upgrade your best position? I suppose the Yankees question how productive Montero can be for them because while he's currently a catcher he is probably too big to play the position in the pros and they are set at first base, but he's good enough to be their DH next year and for a long time to come.

They probably just figure they can go steal Mauer away when Posada need's a replacement. I'm not a fan of trading prospects away, but Montero hasn't been having a good year, and even though it's just one year, it might be making them nervous about his actual potential.

The only possible reason I can imagine them going after Lee now is if they think winning a WS with him this year will help him decide to sign a deal with the Yankees in the off-season. Or maybe they're just mad that Miami is trying to take over all the talk in the sports world, so they figure they'll do something to bring the attention back to NY.

I wonder if the Mariners would be willing to take Burnett instead of Montero.

Buster Olney thinks a deal can be done as soon as today. Cliff Lee is supposed to pitch tonight, so if the Yankees were interested in him, they'd probably want to pick him up before that, so they can get that one extra start out of him this season (have him pitch tomorrow or Sunday).

I was reading that the Yankees might trade Javier Vasquez if they get Cliff Lee. Vasquez is a free agent after the year and it isn't likely the Yankees would offer him arbitration because if they did he'd likely make more than the $11 million he's making this season, so if the Yankees keep him and don't offer arbitration they lose him for nothing. In addition if the Yankees traded for Lee now they wouldn't have to give up a first round draft pick if they signed him in the off-season.

The league needs to work out a way to stop letting teams become so strong that no team stands a chance against them. I am so tired of this crap and I can not understand why a team like Seattle would be willing to help a team in their league.

I think everyone knew Cliff Lee was going to the Yankees as a free agent, but the willingness to give up prospects for three months mean the Yankees think the addition now will guarantee them a trip to the World Series this year.

A sad day they continue to get the absolute best players in baseball and amass them on one team.

I just love it when the haters come out with their anti Yankee rants. I bet you if your team was doing it, you would be all giddy. The Yankees have what Seattle wants (a catching prospect and a good one in Jesus Montero). I will agree that the Cliff Lee deal is overkill. I just hope he doesn't come to the Yanks asking for CC Sabathia money (because the Yanks aren't going to pay that and it would have just ended up being a rental so they better get a fair contract before making this trade a done deal). He does deserve it though (Yankees are trying to cut payroll and believe it or not, even with the big 3 signings from the 08 off season, they lowered their payroll).

This sums up my thoughts but, surprise, we're both Yankee fans.

I agree that if this was happening for other peoples teams, they'd be excited. It's not like the Yankees are just picking up Lee for nothing... it's require getting rid of some prospects, which kind of sucks. But there's the whole "one-in-the-hand" thing.

I think picking him up for 3 months is a waste, unless they can work out some sort of preliminary agreement with him for the next few seasons.

And whether you are a Yankee fan or not, this news should make you feel good for Cliff Lee, who got screwed in the Halladay trade.

Lee has made it clear that he intends to test free agency and isn't interested in discussing a long-term deal. Both the Phillies and Mariners tried to talk long-term deal with him and he rebuffed them. I suppose it's possible he could work something out with the Yankees since they spend more than any team, but it would be a pretty dramatic 180 from the stance he's been taking.
