Phillies/Reds game is 0-0 in the 9th. Reds pitcher Travis Wood is perfect through eight, but Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay has shutout the Reds through nine. Even if Wood is able to complete the perfect ninth here, the game would still continue...
Wood is pitching the third start of his career. Funny enough, Halladay knows what he's going through since he pitched one of the two(three) perfect games earlier this year. EDIT: Perfect game broken up in the bottom of the 9th as the Phillies leadoff batter hits a double. But with the runner on third, Joey Votto makes a potentially game-saving play/catch in foul territory to preserve the 0-0 score and send the game into extras. Both pitchers pitched nine scoreless innings; Halladay gave up like 5 hits and Wood only one. Last edited by wilky61; 07-11-2010 at 01:31 AM. |

Apparently ESPN's panel of MLB analysts are certain that Cliff Lee is going to end up with the Yankees after the season anyway. Something about how his contract is almost up and so that's why he's traded hands several times in the last 12 months. And then I guess the Yankees are just gonna swoop in with a big contract in the offseason.

His voice was a big part of the original Yankee Stadium, and it'd be nice to hear some greeting from him before every game. They still use his voice on the YES promos/commercials, so I guess there's that. |

What a coincidence. Before 2008, the last time they missed the playoffs was 1993, 17 years ago! As soon as they turned the corner (making the playoffs in 1995 for the first time since 1981... there were no playoffs in 1994), you became a fan.
They proceeded to make the playoffs again in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2009. |

And then it just never happened. The two things that stand out to me about that whole ordeal are: 1) how it destroyed the Expos to the point of MLB having to step in and buy the team, and relocate it 2) more recently, the funny reminder when playing video games over the years that some current players (at the time) were banned from the MLBPA and therefore weren't in the game (most notably, since I played tons of AL East games and because he was the only one who ended up having any amount of MLB success, was the absence of Millar as a Red Sock and Oriole, over the years) I'm not sure if any of those banned players still play. The only two I can specifically think of are Millar and Shane Spencer (since he played for the Yankees for a few years). |

The Montreal Expos had an amazing collection of great players - Pedro Martinez, Ken Hill, Jeff Fassero, Butch Henry and Kirk Rueter starting. John Wetteland and Mel Rojas in relief. They had an outfield made up of Alou, Grissom and Larry Walker. Doubt the Braves could have caught them being 6 games back when the strike happened. Montreal was on pace for 105 wins. The strike didn't just kill Montreal baseball either. Other small market teams such as Kansas City and Cincinnati were having a great year in 1994, only to have to dismantle their teams the following year. |

Now I know why he's in the HRD... Cano was told not to hit by the Yankees because they didn't want him to get hurt, so Girardi just replaced 1 Yankee with another... I think they should make a new rule where if you're elected to hit in the HRD and you decline because of injury concern then you should be removed from the ASG completely...

Cano in the HRD is as much of a joke as Swisher. Swisher at least seemed really excited about potentially being the vote-in, so now that he's in, I'm not surprised he wants to participate in everything the ASG week offers. With Cano, I'm not sure if there's really an injury concern, or if it's more of a fear of him falling victim to the HRD curse, in which some hitters that participate in the HRD seem to fall apart in the 2nd half. I'm not sure if I buy the curse idea, and it only seems to apply to power hitters, but who knows. Some stats the WSJ ran last year: 2008 - Lance Berkman: 22 HRs before break (1 every 15 AB), 7 after (1 every 31 AB) 2007 - Alex Rios: 17 HRs before break (1 every 21 AB), 7 after (1 every 42 AB) 2006 - David Wright: 20 HRs before break (1 every 17 AB), 6 after (1 every 41 AB) 2005 - Bobby Abreu: 18 HR before break (1 every 18 AB), 6 after (1 every 44 AB) |
