I completely agree, but won't get into it here because it's too political.

Here's a screengrab I found from Yes Network's eulogy on Steinbrenner:

That's the problem. Spending more than anyone else doesn't take much talent or knowledge.

Well it takes $$ to make $$ and he was passionate about the sports and he didn't like losing! Everyone wants to play for the Yankees

He wasn't the only owner doing that!

There is also Jerry Jones who spends lots of $$$

He was a great owner if you happened to be a fan of the Yankees, as he always spent the money so many other owners are willing to pocket for themselves. But he absolutely ruined the economics of MLB into the current state it is in now, where several small-market teams have no chance of competing for the playoffs.

It may not take much, but it clearly takes something. He started spending money when he took over the team, and after a brief success in the 70s for a couple years, the team went nowhere for 15 years.

After the 2001 loss to the D'backs, Steinbrenner seemed to open up the checkbook again, making some huge signings that ended up being wastes of money... Giambi, Kevin Brown, Pavano, etc.

~~~
Anyone else find it a little weird that a lot of the news keeps using the term "massive heart attack", as if they want to let it be known that it took something huge to take down Steinbrenner?
It's no secret that his health has severely declined over the years, though the Yankees have tried to maintain his image (releasing statements under his name, lying about his health, etc), so I wouldn't be surprised if this was one last spin by the front office.
Agreed. It's just ashame this happened in 2010 rather than 1990 when the financial structure of MLB still existed.
Funny how short a memory Yankee fans have.
- In Steinbrenner's early years as owner he strongly opposed free agency.
- He changed managers 20 times (including dismissing Billy Martin on five separate occasions), and general managers 11 times in 30 years.
- Campaign contributions to Nixon and pardon
Steinbrenner was connected to U.S. President Richard Nixon: he was indicted on 14 criminal counts on April 5, 1974, then pleaded guilty to making illegal contributions to Nixon's re-election campaign and a felony charge of obstruction of justice on August 23. Steinbrenner was personally fined $15,000, while his firm was assessed $20,000 for the offense. On November 27, Commissioner Bowie Kuhn suspended him for two years, but later reduced that amount to fifteen months, with Steinbrenner returning to the Yankees in 1976. U.S. President Ronald Reagan pardoned Steinbrenner on January 19, 1989, in one of the final acts of his presidency
- On July 30, 1990, Commissioner Fay Vincent banned Steinbrenner from baseball for life after he paid Howie Spira, a small-time gambler, $40,000 for "dirt" after Winfield sued him for failing to pay his foundation the $300,000guaranteed in his contract. Subsequently Winfield later entered the Hall of Fame as a San Diego Padre.
And when his 1990 ban from baseball for life was announced AT Yankee Stadium the major of the crowd cheered loudly in celebration. Banned from baseball not once but twice. That takes real effort.
NFL and NBA have salary caps. Buss and Jerry Jones won championships with a capped dollar amount. You're comparing apples and oranges.
Well, Mike Illitch in the NHL , brought cups to Detroit before cap era!
The Owner of Real Madrid, Manchester United brought championships to their respected teams.
Irrelevant. There's no capping of salaries in any major European football league.
Nice comment there.
Exactly this. I hate what the guy did to baseball and he ran the team I loved to hate the most, but I surely didn't wish death on him, sheesh.
And way to go in the Derby, Poppy. You showed 'em, you showed 'em all! lol
