I believe he was actually grooming a son in law to take over because he wasn't getting a long with his sons (shocking... I know) years ago. But then the son in law got divorced and and sons were brought back in the fold.

His son's (Hal & Hank) have been running the team for the last few years. His daughters work for the team as well. I believe outside of bizarre circumstances, the Yankees will be under ownership of the Steinbrenner family for years/decades/centuries to come (the team alone is worth about 1.5 billion and that's not even including the stadium and the YES network).

Probably so, but you never know when you get split ownership. Even a simple divorce (see LA Dodgers) can set off forced sale of a team. There are many scenarios whereby things could fall apart or ownership of a team, often resulting from a death or divorce, could be further splintered.

Price is dealing! I think 97 was the weakest fastball.. gotta love starters on intended short stints (as long as they avoid injury).

If I were Girardi I'd pitch Price 8 innings just to wear him down.

Even though they've been saying that this is the year of the pitcher, there is a lot of hitters this year that already have at least 20 HR at the break.

Just for the hell of it I decided to look up runs per game scored. Runs per game is at it's lowest level since 1992 this season and scoring has been on a slight downward trend since peaking in the late 90's. That is very good for MLB in my view. Some of my best memories watching baseball was when I was a kid in the late 80's-early 90's at the tail-end of a deadball era. I'm happy to see 1-0 duels making a comeback.

Have not looked it up yet but I believe home runs have declined at an even more rapid rate than runs. And you do seem to be right about there being a lot of 20'ish HR players so far. It seems like there are far fewer really high HR guys (45+ in a year) and more guys in the 20-40 range than there used to be.

Brian McCann becomes the 2nd Atlanta Brave and the first since Fred McGriff in 1994 () to win the Ted Williams Allstar Game MVP! That was his second 3-RBI double of the week, btw.

Loved the interview and the presentation of the tropy afterward (a glass bat). He's a very humble kid. He's the first NL player to win the MVP since Mike Piazza in 1996, also a catcher (and in fact McCann's idol growing up, McCann said he was 8yo at the time).

Still not sure how Joe Mauer won so many catcher All Star votes, he is in a horrific slump right now with no sign of coming out of it.

Here is a list of the highest HR total by a player each season (that player's league):

1970 - 45 (NL)
1971 - 48 (NL)
1972 - 40 (NL)
1973 - 44 (NL)
1974 - 36 (NL)
1975 - 38 (NL)
1976 - 38 (NL)
1977 - 52 (AL)
1978 - 46 (AL)
1979 - 48 (NL)
1980 - 48 (NL)
1981 - 31 (NL)
1982 - 39 (AL)
1983 - 40 (NL)
1984 - 43 (AL)
1985 - 40 (AL)
1986 - 40 (AL)
1987 - 49 (AL)
1988 - 42 (AL)
1989 - 47 (NL)
1990 - 51 (AL)
1991 - 44 (AL)
1992 - 43 (AL)
1993 - 46 (AL)
1994 - 43 (NL)
1995 - 50 (AL)
1996 - 52 (AL)
1997 - 56 (AL)
1998 - 70 (NL)
1999 - 65 (NL)
2000 - 50 (NL)
2001 - 73 (NL)
2002 - 57 (AL)
2003 - 47 (AL)
2004 - 48 (NL)
2005 - 51 (NL)
2006 - 58 (NL)
2007 - 54 (AL)
2008 - 48 (NL)
2009 - 47 (NL)

1. The homerun total was pretty high in the 70s (~46 each year, 1970-1980) before settling down in the 80s (~40 each year, 1981-1986). I guess baseball in the 80s favored speed. The total in the late 80s/early 90s was in the high range again (~45 each year, 1987-1994). But look at how it explodes over 1995-2003 to ~59 year! Recently, we have averaged closer to to 50 HR, and no one has broken 60+ in almost a decade.

2. There seem to be three distinct eras in the past 40 years, the first where the NL dominated for 11 of 14 years from 1970-1983, the second where the AL dominated for 11 of 14 years from 1984 to 1997, and the third where the NL has dominated for 9 of 12 years from 1998 to 2009.

3. I think the overall trend agrees with the pitching numbers you posted, but I think the HR numbers are more sensitive to the effects of steroid use (e.g., 1996-2003).

Anyone else get a chuckle after the game when Ken Rosenthal was interviewing Adam Wainwright? The guy literally looked like a midget. Wainwright just towered over him.

I chuckled and just shook my head when that douschebag Chris Rose called David Price "Tampa Bay pitcher David Wright." That guy does NOT belong in sports... or at least baseball commentating. Just horrible.... no credibility.

At least my NL won!!! Go Ethier! Go Furcal! Go Kuo! Go BROXTON!!!

Has anyone been able to come up with a coherent explanation for why David Ortiz wasn't replaced by a pinch runner late in the game? That guy had no business being out there with the game still close and a potential rally. The guy makes Sid Bream look like a speed demon.

I remember hearing rumors of some sort of infidelity, which led to the divorce. If that's the case, that has to be one of the dumbest mistakes of all time. He went from the heir apparent to a nobody.

I actually went to school with his daughter (Steinbrenner's granddaughter), and she dated a friend of a friend, so I met her a few times. She was nice, but it was clear she grew up in an entirely different setting. At one of the parties, she wanted a snack, and my friend had no food in his apartment, so she called up a local pizza place and ordered a dozen pizzas for everyone to share.

Yeah, the height differential was pretty funny, but Rosenthal is apparently really short to begin with. I remember watching a game last year, and the commentators (Joe Buck and that old guy, I think) were making fun of him for being so short. I think he's only a few inches over 5'.

At the time, I assumed it was because A-Rod was the only guy left on the bench, and it'd be such a waste to use him as a pinch-runner. But then after the game, Girardi said he was going to use A-Rod as a pinch-runner for Beltre, if Beltre got a hit. So who knows. What a waste.

Isn't A-Rod like 37 years old? Bit up there in age to be a pinch-runner for anyone.

Have you seen Big Papi run... err.. jog around the bases lately? A-Rod could round all the bases before Papi could make it halfway between 2nd and 3rd.
