They should have hired that kid that stormed the field and evaded security for over 3 minutes a few nights ago. He was the most energized person wearing Orioles gear I've seen in years.

Things were already fine until the Phillies made the bewildering decision to trade Cliff Lee when they got Halladay. I never understood it, and Foxsports had a story today about how dumb a decision trading Lee was.

They do not have to pick up the option but the buyout if they decline the option increased from $2 million to $3 million.

Phillies are not in need of help, they were sporting the longest win streak in the majors Before they signed Oswalt, I am convinced, convinced that they just need to get healthy and stay healthy however Roy Oswalt surely is a welcome addition , two Roys and a Cole sure makes this rotation mighty powerful

Surely the Phillies realize that now. Cliff Lee is a much better pitcher than Oswalt these days and they could have had him for much less money. But as a Braves fan I'm still glad the Phillies got Oswalt instead of St. Louis. St. Louis would have been nearly impossible to beat with Oswalt added to an already great staff. The Phillies are far from unbeatable even with Oswalt and I still think the Cards have a better team.

I agree, very dumb move by the front office, but I think they just may have helped that error take a back seat to what lies ahead. There really had to be more to the failure to sign Lee than we will ever know about because it really did not make good sense at all, so goes pro sports.

Any addition to the Padres offense is an improvement for that team.

It's certainly good for the Phillies and their fans, but is anyone else getting the vibe that the Phillies are turning into the Yankees of the NL? Their payroll has to be getting close to $150 million for next season. The same teams spend, spend, and spend some more. And then the same teams don't have much of a chance to be a winning ball club. The MLB really needs to get some sort of variation of a salary cap if nothing else then for the fans. I guarantee you if there was more fairness and parity in the MLB then fan support would be much better. Obviously sometimes small market teams can slip through the cracks with a good team, but that is definitely not the norm. The league just doesn't seem fair in my eyes.

Well I've said how much I hate the lack of a salary cap on many occasions, but you are right. There does seem to be a trend where several other teams like Boston and Philly are getting up there closer to the Yankees in payroll than I ever expected. The Phillies have the highest per game attendance in MLB this year so they probably have the revenue to keep it going. Even with this Oswalt deal the Phillies are probably lower in payroll than Boston.

Worst return for money spent has to be the Cubs.

I believe these were the opening day payrolls for 2010:

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/salaries/teams

Quote:
1. New York Yankees $206,333,389
2. Boston Red Sox $162,747,333
3. Chicago Cubs $146,859,000
4. Philadelphia Phillies $141,927,381
5. New York Mets $132,701,445
6. Detroit Tigers $122,864,929
7. Chicago White Sox $108,273,197
8. Los Angeles Angels $105,013,667
9. Seattle Mariners $98,376,667
10. San Francisco Giants $97,828,833

Successful teams with remarkably low payrolls:

27. Texas Rangers $55,250,545
21. Tampa Bay Rays $71,923,471
19. Cincinnati Reds $72,386,544
15. Atlanta Braves $84,423,667

Wow I had no idea the Cubs payroll was THAT high! That's just sad.
