Probably for luxury tax/profit sharing reasons. The MLB system is gamed perfectly for certain teams to spend whatever they want while the smaller market teams get just enough in profit sharing that so they won't complain about the lack of a salary cap. In a way MLB is like the stupid BCS system in Division I Football. Almost everyone realizes the system is a joke and gamed for only a few conferences to win every national title but few if any schools will say anything about it.

I hope the Giants get a lefthanded pitcher by todays 1pm trade deadline. They even used a starting pitcher last night lefty Sanchez for middle relief.

Tim Lincecum insisted that his altered windup is not a temporary thing.

"I feel like I feel a little more smooth, a little bit more in rhythm and a little more 'collected,' " said Lincecum, who began moving his hands over his head while pitching from the windup.

Not a bad pickup for the Dodgers. Lilly has pitched reasonably well this year. I still can't see the Dodgers making the playoffs though.

Yankees Closing In On Deal For Kerry Wood

The Yankees are closing in on a deal for Kerry Wood, tweets ESPN's Buster Olney. Wood was just activated from the DL today after dealing with a blister. The 33-year-old righty has a 6.30 ERA, 8.1 K/9, and 5.0 BB/9 on the season in 20 innings. I imagine the Indians would pick up most of the $3.71MM he's still owed.

I have no clue why they'd do that deal. Wood provides nothing. He's not even an improvement at middle-relief.

If you consider a 6.30 ERA to be good then yes, he is good.

His ERA is on a mediocre team.

He is not getting the batting support plus i think he will be a rental . I doubt the Yanks would re-sign him!

What the heck does run support have to do with pitcher ERA. You do understand the difference between offense and pitching, don't you?

Well when he does pitch let's 1 or 2 great innings well the offense doesn't give him points on the board.

And the defense is awfull and hot helping him!

Kerry Wood won't do worse then Chan Ho Park

I think the Yanks made great acquisitions but still unsure about Wood. It could be a good change of air for Wood now playing for the Yanks.

I know the Yanks were interested in the Jays pitcher Scott Downs but the asking price was too much!

Our middle relief does suck and the 6.30 era he has this year is not standard for Kerry Wood. The Yanks didn't have to give up anything for him and the Indians are eating much of his salary for the remainder of the year. He is a free agent after the season so I think this is a great trade for the Yankees. It is a great low risk high reward situation.

Atlanta picked up Kyle Farnsworth. Nice improvement in middle-relief. They also added Rick Ankiel, but I don;t see how he provides anything.
