I don't mean to inject any sort of racial stereotypes into this thread, but when's the last time anyone's seen a white guy as fast as Brett Gardner?

I feel bad that he lost the starting CF job to Melky, but he's an amazing pinch runner to have waiting on the bench. A few games ago he was put in as a PR in the 9th.

The opposing team obviously knew he was going to steal, so they made 3 straight pick-off attempts. Then when they finally threw home, it was a pitch-out, and Gardner was safe.

A pitch or two later, he stole third.

Today he was just put in as a pinch-runner in the 8th inning, with the Yankees down by a run. So it's obvious stealing a base was on his mind.

On the very first pitch, Gardner takes off, and is into 2nd safely.

How fast do you have to be to be able to safely steal bases when the team knows exactly what you are doing?

Nothing like sweeping the champs and then losing 2 of 3 to Washington!

Go Jays! Time to b*tch slap the Reds and Phillies again... for some reason we get to play them twice this season in Inter-league... yet another reason Inter-league is stupid... totally UNBALANCED scheduling!!!

Haha. Welcome to the club.

Yankees lost 2 of 3 to Washington. Should've lost 2 of 3 to the Mets (only won one of those games because of the dropped out in the 9th). And now lost 2 of 3 to the Marlins.

Pretty rough stretch for the last week or so.

Jays and Yanks not doing well in Inter-League... while everyone else in the AL East seems to be doing really well with it... not fair haha!

haha although I would actually love to see a WS in Baltimore... i don't think it's this year but I guess you never know, they could pull a Rockies of 2007 and somehow and go .700 for the rest of the year.

Remember when the Rockies went 21-1 in 2007? Don't look now!

As a Yankees fan, I was rooting for the Rockies in that WS, but they put up one of the worst performances in WS history.

Didn't they lose Game 1 by a dozen runs? Not a great start, and the series was over before it really ever started.

Anyhow, I feel bad for the Orioles being stuck in the AL East. The top 3 teams in the AL East, right now, would be in first place in any other division, except for the NL West).

~~~
I was listening to Mike Francesa today (for those not in the NY area, he's a chubby annoying sports-radio guy. He used to be the Mike half of Mike & The Mad Dog, but the Mad Dog left to start his own show last year, or maybe two years ago).
Anyway, someone called in from Boston, presumably in an attempt to rile up Francesa (even though I doubt that's possible, since he seems more and more like a Red Sox fan now), saying that she's at the point where she's cheering for the Yankees to win, because she doesn't want to lose the Red Sox/Yankees rivalry. She feels that if the Yankees keep losing, then the rivalry won't be fun anymore, since beating the Yankees will no longer mean anything.
Good Sox-Nats game last night, first time that Boston has played in Washington since 1971 (vs the Senators). Is was cool to see Tavarez, who used to pitch for the Sox, come in and mess things up for the Nats like he used to do for the Sox. Up by 5 games now, hopefully they can keep up the good play. Dice K has been a disappointment, but Big Brad Penny has been pretty decent. Tomorrow we'll see how John Schmoltz does, he's scheduled to start Thursday night (vs the Nats) for the first time this season.
Furthermore, if the stands were invisible, you might think these games were at Fenway. The Sox fans far outnumber and outcheer the Nationals fans. Attendance for their park in this series is way above the norm, as well.
Ortiz just scored his 1,000th RBI.
I had a laugh when I saw it was an attendance record in Washington when it was clearly all Sox fans hahaha...
Wow, this thread has really died down.
Anyways, Chicago Tribune is reporting that the sale of the Cubs to Tom Ricketts has been finalized and forwarded to MLB for approval. Since the Tribune owns the Cubs I'd consider them to be a reliable source. Hopefully now the Cubs can make some moves, although I'm not really sure what they'd target since everything other than their starting pitching has been bad, although after taking 3 of 4 against the Brewers they are only 2 1/2 games out, with Aramis Ramirez and Reed Johnson returning.
Do the cubs even have any options to make moves? Most of their stars have pretty big contracts at the moment, don't they?
I'm fine with the Cubs making moves, as long as they never move out of Wrigley. I know some players on the team have complained over the last couple of years about the stadium, but hopefully they don't try to pressure the new owners into planning a new one.
Rough weekend for the Jays, great weekend for the Yankees, who have now won 9 of their last 10, and are within 1 game of Boston now, thanks to Seattle.
