Mark Teixeira is not expected to rejoin the team until Thursday in Kansas City.
Teixeira's wife gave birth to a baby boy earlier today. Lance Berkman will fill in at first base on Tuesday, though he'll likely take a seat against the left-hander Cliff Lee on Wednesday.

Yep, even the smaller market teams that have won the World Series have all paid their players. I would like to see how well a team of charity players fares in MLB.

Way to compare apples and oranges. Not talking charity, just a reasonable disparity in payroll. In the NFL the disparity between the highest team payroll and an average of the bottom 5 payrolls is 69%. In MLB the Yankees payroll is 438% compared to an average of the 5 lowest payroll teams. 438% vs. 69%. The NBA and NHL are similar cases to the NFL. So I can definately see why you'd feel the need to get defensive. Probably not a coincidence MLB has fallen to the level of a 2nd-tier sport in the U.S. to football. Competitive balance has a lot to do with it. If the NFL has to salary cap I imagine the Giants payroll would be in the same league with the Yankees and they'd be racking up Super Bowls. Thankfully that cannot happen since all the other major sports allow for competitive balance. The financial structure of MLB really makes about as much sense as the Bowl system does for NCAA football.

thank you Devil Rays for paying Burrell $11 Mil than handing him to the Giants for nothing... Guys been straight beast for the past few weeks... GW HW run last night and a grand slam just a few innings ago... Giants are up on the Cubbies 7-3

Burrell alone has won like 4 or 5 games for us in the past few weeks

EDIT: Cubs just tied the game 7-7

Not over yet .

Another fine example of how effed up some punishments in pro sports can be, Reds pitcher(Cueto) gets a seven game suspension for getting in to it on the field, Francine Rodriguez or K-Rockhead well he gets a two game suspension(so Far) and he beats the crap out of his in-laws, nice work MLB, oh yeah did I mention he could be charged with felony assault. So the mets have a rapist and a batterer in their starting rotation but hey they did reach.500 today

Cueto is a starter so basically he misses one start. About the right punishment IMO. That K-Rod suspension is BS though. If this were the NFL he'd probably get suspended no less than 2 games of a 16 game season. MLB goes too light on this kind of thing. Say what you will about pro sports but the NFL usually hands out punishments that fit the crime.

I agree, you are right about football and their own brand of punishment, they usually get it right, I fixed that statement. I guess I was a bit heated when I posted,I hope that they change the length of his suspension(should be much longer) after the facts are laid out in front of them, I guess we will see soon enough.

You act as if every other team in baseball is dirt poor and doesn't have a dime to spend on their payroll. The Yankees don't even have the wealthiest owner in baseball. They just want... NEED to win the most. More owners should be like that, if you ask me.

I never argued the Yankees "should" spend less. The lack of a salary cap is a joke. I was merely pointing out that fact. I don't necessarily blame the Yankees for the way things are, but rather MLB as a whole. The Yankees are the natural beneficiary of a sport with no salary cap since NYC is the largest market in the country by a mile and unlike the rest of the U.S. baseball is the dominant sport in those parts. Wealth of the owner has little to do with things. Market size is the prime driver when it comes to spending. As long as the gap between the haves and have nots increases I think we'll continue to see an overall decline in the state of MLB. MLB TV ratings actually peaked in the 1980's. Probably not a coincidence considering the parity the game had in that decade.

Oddly enough this is a recent development. I was looking at MLB payrolls from back in the 1970's and 80's and the difference between the top payroll teams and bottom teams wasn't that great. In fact there was a time in the 80's when Kansas City had the highest payroll in baseball.

I had a feeling this was Chipper's last year going into this season regardless of how he played. He just seems like a guy who won't keep trying to play when he's past his prime and sucks like players such as Greg Maddux did.

A salary cap will never happen in baseball for the simple reason tha the players union won't let it happen (and that's why it hasn't happen). Also, the Yankees ownership takes the money the make from the team and puts it right back into the team. Most other owners just pocket it (same thing goes for those owners who get money from revenue sharing in which the Yankees pay the highest luxury tax in all of MLB).

I actually agree with most of what you say here but check this out. Here are the four major American sports and the % share of revenues the players get. the MLB player's union may claim not to want a salary cap thinking it hurts player salaries, but the numbers say the exact opposite is true. MLB players get the lowest share of revenue of any major sport by a mile. I find it hard to believe the other major sports are all nearly identical in the 55-57% range while MLB players get just under 45% of revenue.

NFL
Total revenue: $6.7 billion
Payroll expenses: $3.85 billion
Percentage to players: 57.5%

NBA

NHL

MLB
