It's possible other teams would consider Manny though. The Rays could use him, as well as the White Sox and Rangers. It seems especially foolish because Whitson is a pitcher and San Diego has one of the best parks for pitchers. Maybe he has his own reasons for not signing though.

Buster Olney wrote about it yesterday on ESPN.com. It is an Insider article so I can't link to it but he says:

"The Yankees traded for Lance Berkman and Austin Kearns, and Kearns has had some nice moments for New York. If the Yankees risked taking on the Manny Ramirez sideshow and Ramirez was fully invested in playing for New York -- throughout the years, he has repeatedly begged the Yankees, through emissaries, to sign him -- he would make a very good lineup even better."

He also goes on to say the Yankees could consider placing a waiver claim on Manny because if he goes unclaimed then the Dodgers could agree to pay some of his salary and trade him to a team like the Rays or Rangers, both of whom would be unlikely to place a waiver claim on him because they'd be on the hook for the $5 million Manny is owed for the rest of the season.

A Giant Legend – Bobby Thompson Passes Away

While most of us weren’t alive when Bobby Thompson hit the shot heard round the world, winning the 1951 pennant for the Giants, his legacy will always remain.

He wasn’t the fielder Willie Mac was. His bat couldn’t compare to Mays’. But he ensured that he will always live in Giant history with a single swing of the bat on October 3rd, 1951.

Thompson’s shot off of Brooklyn Dodger Ralph Branca sent the Giants to the World Series (breaking the 1-1 series tie), a moment that capped a historic comeback. The Giants trailed the Dodgers by 13 1/2 games in mid-August but went 37-7 over the final 44 games to force the three game tie-breaking series with the crosstown rivals.

The Giants eventually went on to lose the World Series in 6 games to the Yankees and ended up moving out west to the Bay a few short years later. But Thompson’s historic blast will always be Giants history, be it in New York or San Francisco.

Mets convert Francisco Rodriguez deal

The New York Mets placed Francisco Rodriguez on the disqualified list and do not intend to pay him until he is physically able to perform, chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon announced Tuesday.

Rodriguez underwent surgery Tuesday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb. Wilpon said Rodriguez acknowledged to the team's trainers that he injured the thumb in the altercation with his girlfriend's father last Wednesday at Citi Field.

Wilpon, who was joined by general counsel David Cohen on a conference call, expected Rodriguez would be ready to return to action by Opening Day next season.

Rodriguez is making $11.5 million this season, meaning he would forfeit $3 million for the remainder of the season if the ruling stands.

Thome needs to play everyday if the Twins want to win the division. Stick Kubel in the field. He would probably have 30 homers this year if he had been the full-time DH for a team.

We're 4 games up with 2 more games against the Sox coming up, our 2 best pitchers will win us those. We should win 2 of 3 against the Angels, maybe 3 of 3 and then we will have a commanding lead over the White Sox. 23-7 in our last 30 games, I love it.

I'm really happy if the Braves can pull off this move. They badly need another bat. With Chipper out for the season they can move Glaus to 3B and start Lee at 1B. Part of Lee's struggles this year probably has to do with playing on such an aweful team. Moving to a contender would probably be good for his numbers.

The Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves are working on a deal to send first baseman Derrek Lee to Atlanta for prospects, according to a league source.

Lee, who is presently dealing with a bulging disc on his lower left side, received an epidural on Monday to relieve the pain and will not be ready to play again until Thursday.

According to a Cubs official, Lee refused to speak to the media before Wednesday's afternoon game against the Padres

Braves top scout Jim Fregosi watched Lee hit four home runs during a series in St. Louis over the weekend. Fregosi reported back to general manager Frank Wren that Lee was swinging the bat as well as he has all season, according to a source.

Atlanta lost All-Star third baseman Chipper Jones for the season with a knee injury on Aug. 10. First baseman Troy Glaus, a former third baseman, could be moved back to third if Lee is acquired.

He would definitely be an upgrade over Glaus, who is a mediocre firstbaseman in the field. Now that it looks like his bat is toast, that would be a great move.

It sounds like the Mets don't want to void his contract, they just don't want to pay him for the remainder of the season since he was hurt in a non-baseball capacity. It really annoys me though that the Player's Association will fight this and has a chance at winning. If you do something that is completely your fault (and illegal) that makes you incapable of performing your job you don't deserve to get paid.

I'll bet the Player's Union and K-Rod do win this case. This is easily the most powerful player's union in all of pro sports. Contracts are practically written in stone.

That's what I like about the NFL as opposed to leagues like MLB. In the NFL if you pull that nonsense you get cut and miss out on pretty much all your pay that's not guaranteed bonuses. In MLB you practically have to be convicted of a felony to have a contract voided. That's why you get people like Zambrano who couldn't care less how they play since all the $100 mill+ is guaranteed.

They'll probably argue to the arbitrator that there is no clause in his contract that says he doesn't get paid if he hurts himself punching his girlfriend's father and therefore win the grievance.
