What the hey? I do wonder if they would suck as badly as they do if they still had that kind of bankroll going into the players' wallets.

Well in the late 80's the highest TEAM payrolls were about $15-20'ish mill. The financial structure is what killed teams like Kansas City and Pittsburgh over the past two decades. Those teams could turn a profit in the 1980's MLB payroll structure but have no hope these days.

EDIT - Here's the chart I was looking for...

Part of it is the two teams just suck and probably always will, not the best locations for baseball teams anyway. Pittsburgh is a football/hockey(I think) town, way too cold for baseball. Kansas City is just not a good city for sports, is it?

Well part of the Pirates problem is deadbeat ownership. The financial reports leaked out earlier this year that embarrassed the team's ownership by revealing the team made a PROFIT of nearly $30 mill in 2007-2008 despite the team being terrible and the owners spending almost no money to make them better.

Quote:
The Pirates earned $29.4 million in 2007 and 2008 — taking $69.3 million in revenue sharing at the same time. Although the Pirates have the lowest team payroll in baseball, they have chosen to use revenue sharing for player development, and they spent $44.3 million in 2007 and 2008. “Even when we’re winning, we will be a revenue-sharing recipient,” Frank Coonelly, the Pirates’ president, told the A.P.

Must be why owners like the Steinbrenners don't like MLB profit sharing, eh?

The Steinbrenners don't have a problem with revenue sharing. They just have a problem with the owners who just pocket the money. Wht's ironic is that I've been hearing that the NBA is talking about possibly doing revenue sharing. MLB needs to tweek the revenue sharing system. Also,

Revenue sharing seems a bit pointless in a sport like the NBA that already has salary caps.

Which begs the question why are they allowed to do this? Shouldn't there be a stipulation that says they must reinvest that money into their club?

We're finally in the World Series and the NL decides to win the AS game. What a stupid rule.

It's incredibly stupid. But both San Francisco and Phily had a better record than Texas this year, so it doesn't matter this time around.

Unfortunately, there isn't (MLB should change that).

Yup, it is a stupid rule. You will never see the NBA or NHL implement a rule like that. The all-star is just a celebration for the fans to see the sports best (which they voted for some) all on the same field. I've been against that winning league from the All-star game gets home field in the WS rule from the get go.

Sure it does. For all practical purposes the Rangers clinched in July and really didn't have to try for the last few months.

Stuff like that makes it impossible to say that the rule is ok because of what happened. You don't know what would have happened.

Uh oh.... VERY bad time to start a brawl. You don't wanna get tossed in a game this big. They better be safe and get Sanchez out of there.

ya hes done.... no way that was intentional by Sanchez who was already wild before that.. if Giants want any chance at winning this game they need to get out of this inning giving up 1 or no runs...
