With that said, they need to get away from the always relying on free agency and start focusing on developing on the minor league front.
I agree, Montero needs more time, and he was trade-bait for Lee during the season, so the Yankees obviously had a plan for next season without him anyway.

Cervelli is a decent stop-gap for Posada, and it's hard to look up facts for who started however many games, but I wouldn't be surprised if Cervelli started close to half this season (Posada played in 120 games this season, but he was often used as a PH late in games, and as a DH in other games). Cervelli's stats show 90 games, and I imagine most of those are starts as catcher, because what else did they use him for (maybe Posada got injured during a game, or he was used as a pinch-runner in other games)? Anyhow, once the post-season rolled around, it was all-Posada, because they suddenly want to fall back on experience.

Posada is my favorite player on the team (Cano is my 2nd, because I'm lining him up as my new favorite, with the expectation that Posada won't be around much longer) and I was a bit disappointed in how poorly he played in the playoffs. It seemed like he was going down swinging in every at-bat, chasing pitches in the dirt. The Twins and Rangers both caught him with the oldest trick in the little league book (runners on the corners, send the guy on 1st to try to draw a throw from the catcher, so the guy on 3rd can score).

I don't think his skills have degenerated that much, and that it's probably more of a reflection of how he was used at the end of the year. It seemed like he was starting maybe one out of every 4 or 5 games, for the last month of the season. He batted .182 over his last 24 games of the season, which I'll assume (for his sake) was due to how sporadically he was used.

~~~~~
As for Jeter, I thought it was commonly assumed that he was going to move to LF as he got older. That would push Gardner out of LF, and leave the Yankees with a crowded outfield (Gardner, Granderson and Swisher, to fill the other 2 spots). I'd maybe use Gardner every day (either CF or RF) and then have Granderson and Swisher take turns playing in the field and DH'ing. But then again, by the time Jeter moves to LF (if he does) who knows how many of the other 3 will still be on the team.
The Yankees have cut ties with pitching coach Dave Eiland.
Crazy. Yankees GM Brian Cashman unloaded the news Monday, saying that Eiland is "not being blamed for what took place" in 2010 and that it was a "private" decision. It sounds like some of the higher-ups in the organization might have wanted a shake-up of some kind after the Bombers' disappointing ALCS loss to the Rangers. Eiland is highly respected and should find a job quickly, either as a manager or pitching coach. Oct. 25 - 12:53 pm et
As opposed to what, if you cant win it, just stop trying?
The Yankees make a ton of money, and they spend a ton of money, that's just the way it is. Let's not act as if the other 29 teams wouldn't spend so much if they had the money to spend (well, maybe 28, since the Pirates probably wouldn't).
well for starters they could stop crying about it and blaming any and everything under the sun as to why they lost...the won in 2009, lost in the ALCS, its not as if the world just ended, yet they overreact and decide each time to clean house and spend another 150 million on new players...pitching coaches take the blame when fatass CC cant win games, or burnett cant pitch...burnett had control issues long before he got to the yankees. How bout spend your money more wisely? Texas was just better, it easily coulda and prolly shoulda been a 4 game sweep
Since you're not in the Yankee universe, it pretty obvious you don't know anything. The franchise has a win it all or the season was a failure rule (very, very few teams can realistically thank that way). Also, they are not blaming no one. They lost as a team. End of story.
the arrogance of yankee fans is just astounding...i have been a baseball fan for a long time and know plenty about the sport and teams outside of my hometown atlanta braves...i know full well the yankees goal is to win the WS every year...seeing the yankees lose and seeing fans like you who are so arrogant lose is what makes the postseason fun to watch even if the braves arent in it
Isn't it the goal of every competing team to win the WS? I know when my Dodgers lost I sure as hell wasn't satisfied just because they were in the playoffs.
I admit I haven't watched much ESPN lately, so I may have missed it, but when were the Yankees crying and blaming everything under the sun for their loss?
There's nothing irrational or ridiculous about what they're doing (if anything) and will do in the off-season (if anything).
They lost.
They don't like losing.
They'll try to figure out why they lost.
They'll make some changes to try not to lose again.
You said yourself that the Rangers outplayed the Yankees. Fair enough. I don't disagree. So if the Yankees do nothing between now and 2011, what can they expect to do against the Rangers next time?
nowhere did I say a team cant improve themselves in the offseason....there are multiple ways to do that other than just throwing the highest dollar contracts at what are perceived to be the top free agents every single offseason....make some trades, develop some younger guys etc....the yankees are an old team, they would be better off getting younger IMO...jeter arod posada etc are old... to think that playing such a huge amount of games would not affect their play late in october would be naive
You honestly believe that Baltimore O's came in this season with the thinking "we're going to win it all"? it was more likely a "lets try to finish above 500" thinking.
You know as well as I do I didn't mean teams competing for a 500 season. The Twins, Rays, Braves, etc were all competing for a title. I guarantee you the fans of those teams weren't content just because they were in the postseason.
Thing is you're never going to field a competitive team with the kind of incompetant ownership/management they have in Baltimore. And that really is ashame. I hate seeing teams with a great tradition like Baltimore and Pittsburgh fielding garbage teams year after year.
