Quote:
As part of the interview, Mrs. Lee accused New York fans of unspeakably vile behavior at Yankee Stadium during the American League Championship Series.

Perhaps the Rangers’ greatest sales pitch simply was having Kristen sit in the visiting family section at Yankee Stadium during the playoffs. She says there were ugly taunts. Obscenities. Cups of beer thrown. Even fans spitting from the section above.

“The fans did not do good things in my heart,” Kristen says.

“When people are staring at you, and saying horrible things, it’s hard not to take it personal.”

Adding to the veracity of Kristen Lee’s claims was a photograph taken by the wife of Texas Ranger Matt Treanor, volleyball star Misty May-Treanor. In the picture, posted to May-Treanor’s Facebook account, she wrote the following caption:

Yep 3 Yankee fans that show respect…..spit anyone nothing like a shower of it. Thanks fellas very classy!

In the context of Lee’s impending free agency, it’s hard not to think that the soft spoken Arkansas native won’t weigh his wife’s discomfort in New York as he makes his decision on what team to sign with in 2011.

Add in the ugly imagery of Yankee fan behavior broadcast nationally during the 2010 playoffs and it isn’t unreasonable to think New York fans may have cost their own American League team a chance to land MLB’s top offseason free agent.

Those who dismiss the influence of player wives when it comes to free agency decisions as it pertains to New York must have a short memory.

The NEW YORK DAILY NEWS reported in 2008 that Leigh Texeira, wife of native Texan and New York Yankee Mark Texeira, played a notable role in his decision to throw in with the bombers:

Throughout his free agency, Teixeira solicited his wife’s opinion and she kept saying, “I just want you to be happy,” Teixeira recalled. On date night, Teixeira asked, “Everything’s equal, where do you want to go? She finally said, ‘I want you to be a Yankee.’”

… In the end, it was his wife who helped the Yankees get their new first baseman. “(Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman) Cash should give Leigh a hug,” Teixeira joked.

Sounding more and more like New York’s only chance to land Lee is if the only pants in the family are by Majestic. (With moisture-wicking!)

Sporting event fans can be the biggest douches in the world. I've heard Josh Hamilton say some have chanted "Hamilton smokes crack" at him in the outfield.

Even with that, he still has a better chance of going to NY than Tampa (even though I prefer that he stays in Texas).

Haha. The Yankees just need to show her 5th Ave, and she'll forget all about Texas.

Guess it depends on taste. I wouldn't want to live in a badly overcrowded city like NY. But at the same time I wouldn't want to live in a state governed by theocrats like Texas. At least NY is a sane state socially.

Right field in Yankee Stadium was (and is?) a notoriously brutal place for opposing teams.

I think they've mostly cleaned up their act over the years. Bald Vinny, the de-facto leader of the Bleacher Creatures now, seems to guide them more toward pro-Yankee cheers. For example, they've recently decided to stop singing "Why Are You Gay?", their parody of "YMCA" (which the Yankees play in the middle of the 6th inning) that was usually directed at any fan of the opposing team in their area.

And I'm pretty sure they don't throw things at other players anymore.

Charging people exorbitant amounts because of which part of Manhattan they live in is not really sane to me, also something they will have to consider when they decide whether or not to sign with the Yankees or the Rangers.

True, but someone with Lee's money would probably live in Alpine, NJ, not in Manhattan. They get all the easy access to the great things about NYC, but none of the cramped living.

You do realize the Rangers ownership did that exact same thing in the past to taxpayers, right? It was engineered by some owner named George W. Bush.

What is it with the bleacher seats? I don't even dare go to the bleachers at Dodger Stadium. I swear there's some kind of fight always going on over there.

Yep, Lee would probably be Sabathia's neighbor in Alpine.

As classist as it sounds, I think it's mostly due to price. A bleacher seat in Yankee Stadium costs a fraction of what the box seat a few feet in front of it costs.

I don't know what the current pricing is, but I remember as recently as a few years ago, in the old stadium, a bleacher seat only cost $8. That brings in a different type of person than a $90 box seat, even though they're roughly in the same area.

I think you are mostly right there. And quite honestly I prefer the "cheap seats" for attending most pro and college sporting events even though I can usually afford better seats. I've always found that the most knowledgable and passionate fans reside in the cheap seat sections. The box seats/high priced seats are typically the corporate types who know little to nothing at the game, show up late, leave early and only go to games to be noticed. Just watching the LCS series at home I could see a bunch of rich business types in the box seats just staring around blankly like they have no idea what's going on.

I would agree with that. I actually felt bad for Tim Lincecum as he was warming up before a game in the outfield this year. Man they let him have it, lol. How these ballplayers keep their composure at times baffles me.

If you got paid the kind of money they do, you'd probably be able to zone out and just do your job like they do. They wouldn't be getting paid exorbitant sums of money if they couldn't ignore hecklers.

Most players handle it well. Others don't. Remember Albert Belle?
