Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was named AL Manager of the Year, while Padres manager Bud Black was named NL Manager of the Year. Black defeated Reds manager Dusty Baker by 1 vote, while Gardenhire easily won the AL vote. It's Gardenhire's first win as Manager of the Year after being runner-up 5 times.

I wouldn't say any particular AL manager stuck out this year as doing an incredible job. My vote probably would have gone to Gardenhire too.

Was Buck Showalter even eligible? Until he took over, I imagine every AL team (with the exception of the Mariners) looked at their games against the O's as guaranteed wins, and Buck seemed to change that. Although he did lose them their #1 pick in the draft. Last edited by toef; 11-17-2010 at 10:42 PM. |

Minnesota seems like an odd place for a Japanese player to go. Typically they seem to sign with west or east coast teams in cities with a significant Asian population.

I'm anxious for the AL Cy Young announcement today. It seems like it will either be CC Sabathia (21-7) or Felix Hernandez (13-12). No starting pitcher has ever won the Cy Young with less than 15 wins, but Hernandez also had by far the worst offense supporting him while CC had by far the best offense. Felix led the AL in ERA, innings pitched, quality starts, and was one strikeout shy of the major league lead. His 2.27 ERA is almost a full run better than CC's 3.18 and he had 35 more strikeouts and 10 more innings pitched. It's certainly going to be an interesting decision.

Yankees reportedly offered Jeter a 3-year, $63 million deal.
Jeter turned it down. I lost some respect for him. I didn't think he'd be the kind of guy to holdout with the Yankees, and he wouldn't get anywhere near $21m/yr from any other team. |

I'm not surprised he turned it down. He's made it clear he wants a long-term deal of at least 4 years and preferably 5-6 years. If Jeter were to listen to other teams I don't think he could get more than a 3-year deal, and it certainly wouldn't be near $21 million per year. In the end there's no question Jeter will remain with the Yankees. No team will offer near the money and his advertising value would take a huge blow if he left New York, so the only question is who caves on the length of the deal.

I don't think it's greed, he just knows the Yankees will eventually cave. Why take a 3-year offer when you know you can get 4 or 5? Jeter is still one of the better fielding shortstops. He didn't deserve the Gold Glove, Texas' Elvis Andrus was a much better fielder, but he's still one of the better fielding AL shortstops, but I agree his defense is only going to get worse. I think it's understood that in a couple years he's going to have to move to the outfield.
