The Rangers have offered arbitration to Cliff Lee.
This is a procedural move, as Lee will sign a long-term deal at some point this offseason. According to Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports, the Yankees have offered him a six-year deal worth around $140 million, while the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo had the offer at five years and $115-$120 million a few days ago. Lee, 32, posted a 3.18 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 28 starts in 2010, fanning 185 batters while walking only 18. The Rangers are expected to match the Yankees' offers, at least initially, and the Nationals are likely to stay aggressive throughout the negotiations. Justin Morneau (concussion) has begun working out.
Morneau suffered a concussion in July of 2010 and did not return, but he expects to be ready by the start of spring training and should be back to his old MVP-like ways. "The road to recovery is going well," Morneau wrote in an e-mail to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "I started working out again this week, and I am feeling pretty good. It has been a long and frustrating road, but feels good to be able to function normally on a day-to-day basis."

According to Bill Madden of the New York Daily News Derek Jeter's agent wants a 6-year, $150 million deal from the Yankees, and he isn't budging from his $25 million per year demand. Jeter's agent is clearly living in a dream world if he thinks he can get a 36-year old with declining skills $25 million per year. The Yankees are doing the right thing by telling him to negotiate with other teams because he's quickly going to find out nobody will offer him more than a 3-year deal and it won't be near the $15 million per year the Yankees offered. If the Red Sox refuse to negotiate with Jeter he'll have absolutely no leverage to try to force the Yankees to offer more money and years.

Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that the Twins have won exclusive negotiating rights on infielder Tsuyoshi Nishioka.
The Twins now have 30 days to work out a deal with the 26-year-old infielder. He played shortstop in Japan and could allow Minnesota to non-tender J.J. Hardy, who made $5.1 million in 2010 and will be seeking a raise. Nishioka batted .346 and won the Nippon Professional Baseball batting title in 2010. If true, this does more to confirm my suspicion that Jeter's demands are based on some sort of jealousy of A-Rod. He probably can't stand the thought that A-Rod is a Yankee until 2017. If Jeter can't stay around that long, he at least wants to make more than A-Rod (A-Rod gets, on average, $24.9 million per year, for the last 7 years of his deal).

For what it's worth, I don't think either of those aging Yankees are worth near $25 million a year, stupid Steinbrenners.

Nobody thought A Rod was worth that kind of money but the Yankees. I never understood why they gave him so much money. They weren't bidding against anyone, if they had offered him 7-years $180 million he would have accepted because he had no alternative. I'll never understand why they gave him 10-years and $275 million.
