Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago reports that the Cubs are working toward a trade for Rays right-hander Matt Garza.
Officials from the Cubs and Rays met Wednesday at the Winter Meetings in Orlando. The Brewers and Rangers have had similar sit-downs, but Levine has been told that the Cubs' bid was the most attractive. Garza, 27, finished with a 15-10 record, 3.91 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 204 2/3 innings this year in the tough AL East. He would really enjoy pitching in the NL Central. Dec. 8 - 10:28 pm et

I think it's safe to say the Rays will be a .500 team at best next season, no way they can survive losing half their team.

Haha. I think Boston has officially crossed over and joined the Yankees on the Dark Side. Missing the playoffs hurts, but it makes for an interesting off-season. Two big deals down, now they just need to sign their own version of AJ Burnett.

Don't they already have their own AJ Burnett in John Lackey? They've got identical 5-year, $82.5 million contracts and similar first year stats after signing their contracts.

I'm kind of surprised Crawford signed already. I would have thought his agent would have delayed agreeing to a deal to see what happens with the Yankees and Lee. If the Yankees miss out on Lee (which seems unlikely at this point) then I would think a bidding war could break out between the Yanks and Sox. I wonder if his agent thought they'd lose leverage if Lee signed with the Yankees and the Yankees decided against going after Crawford as well.

Lackey was very disappointing last year, for sure. Even Beckett was pretty disappointing. Those two kept us out of the playoffs, some might say.

The Yankees have added a 7th year to their offer for Cliff Lee, according to both Sports Illustrated and ESPN. The dollar amount for the 7th year is unknown.

And they'd be right. The Sox were still scoring enough runs despite missing both Youkilis and Pedroia.

My only concern with the deal(other than him being grossly overpaid), is that the AL East is loaded with good left handed pitching and the Yankees may add another.

Lefties in the AL East:

NY: Sabathia and possibly Lee and/or Pettite
TB: David Price
TOR: Ricky Romero, Brett Cecil, and Marc Rzepczynski
BAL: Brian Matusz

As if they weren't already going to overpay for him, they're bumping it up some more. As good as Lee is, the tail-end of his contract is going to be a waste of money (though the same could be said for Crawford's deal).

According to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the Brewers do not want to go past two years to sign Carl Pavano.
The Brewers have regretted handing out multi-year contracts to pitchers in their 30s in the past, so they don't want to get burned again. And so, if Pavano wants a three-year, $33 million deal similar to the one Ted Lilly received from the Dodgers -- something he can probably get in this environment -- you can probably count the Brewers out. Hoping Pavano comes on back to Minnesota!

Thank goodness that the Nats are in the NL-East.

Though it will not matter for a few years anyway.

But this is just getting ridiculous. Either get a salary cap in place, or just move the RAYS out of Florida.

And Giants proved that winning the World Series, shutting down a high powered Phils & Rangers offense

I mean they both still don't have the lineup that Boston has but yeah pretty much, but then again if Bostons rotation plays to their potential then it should be over

Beckett, WS:MVP
Lester, All-Star
Lackey, All-Star

if those guys play anywhere near to form watch out and then you have the guys who when they are on can beat anyone in

Buchholz
Wakefield
Matsuzaka

Some numbers to show what an improvement Crawford is for the Sox

All of the RS Left Fielders avgs.
BA = .230
OBP= .303
HR = 18
SB = 6

Crawford alone
BA= .307
OBP = .356
HR = 19
SB = 47

There were reports that the Red Sox offered Lee a seven year contract. Supposedly they offered him a contract with more years but fewer dollars, so that Lee's agent could go back to the Rangers and Yankees saying that they've received a 7-year offer from the Red Sox.
