Now it'll really be interesting to see what Cash does. With all of the question marks in the rotation and Pettitte being uncertain about coming back, it could be a long season if he doesn't make a splash.

He did make a splash, he signed the best SS in the game to that ginormous contract...oh wait...

It was a necessary signing that doesn't change the complexion of the team.

The Phillies getting him utterly devastates the Yankees for 2011, who were likely not going to win the division with him anyway against the juggernaut Red Sox. That rotation might go down as the greatest in history if no one gets injured.

It's not stunning that Cliff Lee didn't sign with #Rangers. It's stunning that it wasn't about $ -- and he still didn't sign with Rangers.

I'm not buying the hype for the Red Sox until the season is well underway. They add two players to their lineup and suddenly they're unstoppable? Position by position, I'd take the Yankees in a majority of the lineup.

Sure, the Red Sox had a rough season last year, but it's not like the Yankees were playing up to their potential either. Teix had a bad year, ARod was mediocre, Jeter was terrible, and on and on. Pettitte missed almost the entire second half of the season, and AJ lost 15 games by himself. Yet somehow the Yankees still ended up with 95 wins.

The Yankees don't/didn't need Lee to get to the playoffs, or win the division. More than anything else, the benefit of having him is that you don't have to face him in the playoffs. Now that he's no longer an option, the Yankees may need to go find another option. But if Pettitte decides to come back, there's no rush, and they could just wait until the trade deadline and see who's available to add to the roster for the playoffs.

The Red Sox definitely put themselves back into contention for the division, but it's far too early to declare them the AL East champs.

Despite the bad idea, it seems like the Yankees are still somewhat talking to the Royals about trading for Greinke. KC wants Gardner as part of the deal, which would make this a terrible idea.

Not only do I think Greinke would be a disaster waiting to happen, but Gardner is one of my top 3 favorite guys on the team.

I hope losing out on Lee doesn't make the Yankees panic and do something stupid.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post is hearing that the Yankees will not attempt to trade for Zack Greinke, even if they miss out on Cliff Lee.
Buster Olney of ESPN.com hinted at the same thing earlier Monday and Jayson Stark, also of ESPN.com, heard that the Royals don't like the Yanks' up-the-middle prospects. So we can probably count the Yankees out of this race. The Blue Jays, Nationals and Brewers are also said to be interested. Texas is too, but they lack major league-ready middle infield prospects and those are the type of players that Kansas City is looking for. Dec. 13 - 2:05 pm et

According to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com, the Phillies are attempting to trade Joe Blanton in order to free up some salary.
Blanton is owed $17 million over the next two seasons, so he's a logical piece to move now that the club has secured Cliff Lee. The Phillies will likely have to be willing to absorb a sizable portion of his contract in order to move him. Dec. 14 - 12:40 am et

The problem with the 2010 Red Sox was NOT their hitting, it was with the pitching staff which they have yet to address this offseason (unless I missed something). I think they were second in runs scored behind the Yankees.

Maybe their philosophy going forward is to try and win a lot of 8-7 games.

Problem with the 2010 Red Sox was injuries plain and simple. If they can stay healthy in 2011 they should be on par with anyone in the AL.

I still cannot believe Lee signed with the Phillies. Yuck...

It's not much better (if at all) than him going to the Phillies.

I feel betrayed. Instead of shunning us to go with my most hated team, he shuns us both and goes to my second most hated team (outside the division). DAMMIT!!! We can still get Greinke and Pettite would love to come back to Texas.

And their bullpen imploded, I guess that is why they are being renovated. The Sox are supposedly looking to unload a few of their now redundant prospects, like Lars Anderson, for relief pitchers. There is still the possibility that they trade Matsuzaka and/or Papelbon.

If the Sox get a good season out of Becket or Lackey, they will compete for the Division title and make the Playoffs. If they get a good season out of both, they'll win it.

Rumors are swirling that the Sox may acquire Blanton from the Phillies. Seeing as how the Sox already have six starters(Lester, Bucholz, Becket, Lackey, Wakefield, and Matsuzaka), one would have to be going somewhere for them to add Blanton.

Petitte is not going to Texas. He told Nolan Ryan he was either staying with the Yankees or retiring. I've heard the Rangers don't have the prospects to get Greinke either. The Royals want a high-end catching prospect and from what I've read the Rangers don't have that. From the sounds of it the Royals want a package similar to what the Rangers got from the Braves for Mark Teixiera (Elvis Andrus, Jarrod Saltalamacchia Neftali Felix and Matt Harrison) and will be patient and wait for the right deal.
