And I think some of that has to due with so many guys who flooded the NBA by coming right out of high school. Back in the pre-mid 90's era the top guys tended to at least play a couple years of college ball and were better prepared when they landed in the NBA. According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, Magglio Ordonez has re-signed with the Tigers on a one-year, $10 million deal.
Heyman says Maggs turned down two-year offers elsewhere because of his loyalty to Tigers owner Mike Ilitch. That's quite a bit of money to pay for a soon-to-be 37-year-old coming off major ankle surgery whose production has been in decline, but they likely had to up their offer in order to get him to take the one-year pact. Ordonez batted .303/.378/.474 with 12 homers over 323 at-bats in 2010, but he is poor defensively and has averaged less than 400 at-bats the last two years due to injury. Dec. 16 - 1:31 pm et

Of course they are. Papelbon is coming off an unimpressive year and will likely make $11-12 million in arbitration for the 2011 season. With Daniel Bard ready to take over the closer role and Bobby Jenks reportedly close to signing, the Sox would surely be willing to listen to a sensible offer. It remains to be seen if they'll have any interested parties, though.

The Red Sox signing of Bobby Jenks is now official, as he's signed a two-year, $12 million contract. He will be the setup man in 2011 and then the closer in 2012 once Papelbon leaves. I really think at this point the Red Sox should just withdraw their arbitration offer from Papelbon. Nobody is going to trade for a closer that blew 8 saves and had an ERA near 4.00 last year and is making $11 million.

I never thought Jenks was that good really but that's the Red Sox's problem now.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Nationals are close to re-signing Chien-Ming Wang to a one-year deal.
He'll probably get an incentive-laden deal with a low base salary. Wang signed a $2 million deal with the Nats in February but never threw a pitch for them due to shoulder issues. He reportedly looked good during the Nationals' fall instructional league after the end of the season and is worth another gamble if his shoulder is sound.

I'd compare him to Joba Chamberlain. They both have good stuff, they just don't always have it.

According to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News, the Yankees are "exploring" the option of signing Rafael Soriano.
Feinsand says the Yanks have had preliminary discussions with Scott Boras, Soriano's agent. The hard-throwing righty posted a 1.73 ERA and converted 45-of-48 save opportunities for the Rays in 2010 but would obviously be used in a setup role in New York. Yankees GM Brian Cashman is said to be willing to pay Soriano "closer money" to set up Mariano Rivera and then take over after Mo retires. Soriano would surely prefer to close somewhere right away, but he could go where the most money is.

According to ESPN.com's Buster Olney, free agent reliever Brian Fuentes is in search of a three-year deal worth around $15 million.
And why wouldn't he be? Setup men are inking multi-year contracts left and right this offseason and Fuentes has as good of numbers as all of them. The southpaw finished the 2010 season with a 2.81 ERA and 1.06 WHIP, holding left-handed hitters to a .128/.122/.149 batting line.

Agreed. That's why the NBA stopped allowing HS players to enter the league. Now the want to raise the age limit to 20. Supposedly the union is fighting this (which could lead to a lockout for the 2011-2012 season). With that said, lets get back to baseball.

He would've been nice to keep. Not sure why the Yankees couldn't throw $2m to him, or if he just didn't like playing in NY. Who knows.

Ya, I'm scratching my head on that one. He was actually pretty effective for the Yankees down the stretch. You'd think he could have gotten more money than that.
