I think everyone saw this coming. The Rays had about a 3-4 year window of success and didn't quite get the job done. It's firesale time. However it does appear the Rays received some very good prospects here.

Well I believe the owner is very wealthy. But even so it's obvious the Rays cannot draw 20K even a championship calibur team, so there's little point in spending a lot of money they'll never recoup.

Postseason and games against the Red Sox or Yankees they sell out. Everything else is <15K for the most part. They even had a weekend concert series the past couple years with well known bands performing for free after the games and it didn't do much for attendance. Baseball just isn't working in St> Pete... err, Tampa I mean.

Well, the Rays had 6 starters, so someone had to go! I'd of liked to see Shields go, but he had no trade valve! And, with the other two (Crawford & Pena) they weren't traded, but left for FA! So, I wouldn't really call it a "dismantled" yet! lol!

Neither is football! The Bucs couldn't sell out one game this season even with a good record!

lol I don't know why people just don't give a crap, I kinda think its attributed to most of the people coming from other states and not really having a vested interest in the team... But you'd still think they could get 50+k fans for both lol.

All professional sports teams in Florida have attendance problems to some extent. And not always just when they suck. Teams like the Bucs and Rays have had trouble despite being very good in recent years. Marlins have two championships ane their attendance has always sucked. I hope it will eventually change as more and more people are becoming lifelong Floridians as opposed to the past few generations of residents, almost all of whom were transplants.

I'm 30 and lived in central Florida my entire life and even I have trouble caring much for in-state teams like the Rays or Marlins because they didn't even exist when I was a kid. I grew up on the Braves.

Nice pick up for fate's Cubs. He seemed to pitch well against the Sox every time they met. Spits way too much, but hey.

Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that the Rangers are "actively trying to lure" free agent Jim Thome to Texas.
The Rangers have committed to using Michael Young as their primary designated hitter this season, but Young could simply take half of his starts at first base and allow Thome to bat solely against right-handed pitchers. The 40-year-old posted a ridiculous .302/.455/.698 batting line with 19 home runs in 189 at-bats against righties last season for the Twins and would probably do quite well within the cozy confines of the Ballpark in Arlington. Happy retirement to one of the greatest relief pitchers of all-time and a guy who should be in the HOF one day.

Trevor Hoffman retiring

Trevor Hoffman, the Major League Baseball leader in saves, has decided to retire, the Beverly Hills Sports Council, which represents Hoffman, confirmed Tuesday.

Hoffman ends his 18-year career with an all-time record 601 saves, 41 ahead of the New York Yankees' Mariano Rivera, who is in second place with 559.

Hoffman, who turned 43 on Oct. 13, will return to the San Diego Padres, the ballclub where he built his reputation, in a still-undefined front-office role, he said.

Rockies signed OF Carlos Gonzalez to a seven-year, $80 million extension.
The new mega-deal was agreed to last week but wasn't made official until a press conference Tuesday at Coors Field. Gonzalez will earn $1 million this season, $5 million in 2012, $7.5 million in 2013, $10.5 million in 2014, $16 million in 2015, $17 million in 2016 and $20 million in 2017. It's a massive commitment, but CarGo was one of the best all-around players in baseball last season and looks like the real deal. It should work out for both sides. Jan. 11 - 3:47 pm et

Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated tweeted that the Yankees have started contract discussions with Andruw Jones. They apparently think that Jones could resurrect his career by working with the Yankees hitting coach, who has previously helped Nick Swisher and Curtis Granderson improve.

He's still hitting around 20 homers a year which isn't terrible so if they could get him to 30-40 again and up around .270-.300 that would be awesome

The guy had a complete mental breakdown several years ago and has never shown any real signs of recovery. At best I could see him getting his average up to maybe .230'ish. Anything more than that just seems wishful thinking. He reminds me a bit of Rick Ankiel, who looked like a future All-Star pitching for the Cardinals before his epic mental collapse. Ankiel never recovered as a pitcher but actually did make a comeback as a position player. Seems to me they are wasting their time with Andruw.

Yeah .270-.300 and 30-40 homers would be an amazing turn around. I expect maybe more along the lines .240-.265 (he was already hitting .230 ) and 23-27 home runs...

Let the Yankees have him, the more broken-down aging hitters they have, the better for the rest of the American League.

Just be thankful the Braves part ways with him at the right time, would have sucked had they given him the big deal that the Dodgers gave him.

That's the thing. The year that he fell apart was his big free agent year. He hit something like .220 that last year with Atlanta. If he had one more great season that year some team probably would have thrown a huge 5 year $80 mill plus deal at him. The Dodgers wasted money on his but thankfully they only signed him for 2 years.
