Moron. I understand that celebratory gunfire is common in many third world countries but these people need to realize it's very dangerous. What goes up must come down.

Alfredo Simon denied bail

Baltimore Orioles reliever Alfredo Simon was denied bail Tuesday and will remain in jail on an involuntary manslaughter charge.

The 29-year-old pitcher is expected to stay in jail for a year while officials investigate a fatal shooting on New Year's Eve.

Simon's lawyer has said he was firing celebratory shots in the air. A bullet killed 25-year-old Michel Castillo, and injured his brother, 17-year-old Starlling Castillo, in the city of Luperon in Puerto Plata.

"We think the judge acted in such a way to avoid a reaction from the media," Dilone said. "There is already forensic evidence that Simon's weapon did not cause the death of the victim."

A judge had earlier ruled that Simon could be held for up to a year pending trial. Simon could face up to two years in prison if convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

Lou Piniella to help Giants

Quote:
SAN FRANCISCO -- Lou Piniella is staying right in the baseball mix.

The longtime skipper told The Associated Press on Wednesday he has agreed to a one-year contract with the San Francisco Giants to work as a special assistant for the World Series champions. Sweet Lou will report to general manager Brian Sabean.

"I took a little consulting job with the Giants," Piniella said in a telephone interview from his home in Florida. "It's a done deal. I look forward to it. Brian and I are good friends. Whatever Brian needs me to do."

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that Jermaine Dye is likely to retire.
The free agent outfielder has been contacted by the Rays, Rockies and Phillies, and has probably been offered a minor league contract or two, but he wants a guaranteed roster spot and it's just not going to happen. "I would still like to play, but I think my choices have passed and teams have gone with other people," Dye said Wednesday. "I will continue to stay in shape and hopefully someone will call. If nothing gets done by the end of the spring, I may call it a career." He boasts 325 career home runs. Feb. 2 - 11:20 pm et

I'm heading down to my parent's winter home in Arizona next month and think I'll check out some spring training games. I've never been to a spring training game before and tickets are incredibly cheap so I think I'll give it a shot. I'll probably go to the Cubs-Indians game on March 10 and maybe to a game on March 11. I'm heading down there in April too and might catch the Diamondbacks home opener against the Reds. I'm not a fan of either team but I'd like to check out the Diamondbacks stadium.

Andy Pettitte will reportedly announce he's retiring tomorrow. YES Network play-by-play man Michael Kay was the first to announce the news. Pettitte is reportedly flying to New York today to tell the Yankees followed by a press conference tomorrow.

White Sox signed SS Alexei Ramirez to a four-year, $32.5 million contract extension with a $10 million club option for 2016.
Ramirez will still earn $2.75 million in 2011, so the extension will actually begin in 2012. He will earn $5 million in 2012, $7 million in 2013, $9.5 million in 2014, $10 million in 2015 and either $10 million in 2016 or a $1 million buyout. The 29-year-old has a .283/.321/.430 batting line over his first three seasons in the major leagues and has evolved into one of the better fielding shortstops in the game. He's obviously not the bargain he was before, but he should still come pretty close to matching this contract if h

This is going to put a hamper on our starting pitching. He will be missed. His #46 will be in monument park in a few years.

I'm really surprised he didn't come back for one more year. The Yankees really needed him. Not sure what the fall-back plan is.

They should just offer him another few million, the dude still has a bit left in the tank and they need him more than he needs them.

Isn't Millwood still on the market? I know he's bad but he's probably better than some of those guys you listed after Burnett. Heck, even Burnett is an aweful guy to have as your #3.

if AJ pitches to his potential, he is nasty.... Nova is so young its hard to know what youre gonna get with him... he looked pretty good though

have people given up all faith in Joba? im talking mainly to Yankee fans who have a chance to see him more often

ESPN has an interesting poll up: Is Andy Pettitte a Hall of Famer? Surprisingly Yes leads 51-49%. He wouldn't even make the HOF even without the admitted doping. He was a terrific pitcher, just a good deal short of a HOF'er.

For some reason Pettitte has been pretty much forgiven by the press and public for his steroid use. It may be because he admitted it rather than denying like Clemons and Palmeiro but it's not like he had a choice, he tested positive. It may also have to do with the fact that he seems nicer and gets along with the press better than players like McGwire and Barry Bonds so there's fewer articles criticizing him. Without the steroid use I'd say he's a borderline Hall of Famer. His 240 wins and 3.88 ERA are both good and his playoff record 19 wins might have been enough to get him in under normal circumstances, but I don't think it's enough to overcome the steroid usage.

He's a borderline HOFer. Just like what Jorge Posada will be when he hangs it up. Both will have their # and a plaque in monument park but HOFers? the jury will be out on both.
