Tony La Russa believes the player's union is trying to bully Albert Pujols into getting a record-setting deal. La Russa said the union sees Pujols as someone who can raise the salary bar. La Russa said he has no evidence of this and the union denied they've had any contact with Pujols.

Pettitte doesn't strike me as a wishy-washy Brett Favre/Roger Clemens type who can never make up his mind. If Pettitte says he's retired I'll take his word for it.

It wouldn't shock me if Pettitte returned in July or August. At his retirement press conference he admitted he'd been going back and forth with the decision and come mid-summer he may be bored or have an itch to return.

Actually it might benefit Pettitte to just kick back half the season and relax. I'll bet after a few months without him the Yankees (probably in a tight race with Boston), with their lack of starting depth will throw a ton of money at him to come back for just half a season or less.

Whoa. Too bad Willie Randolph and Omar Minaya have already been fired. Seeing Donald Trump fire them on national TV would have been priceless. Isn't Trump a Yankees fan anyway?

Donald Trump approached about Mets

Who is apprentice and who is master could be a problem.

Donald Trump said Tuesday that Mets owner Fred Wilpon called him to set up a face-to-face meeting to talk about buying part of the club, The New York Times reported. But Trump said he wants to be boss.

Faced with a lawsuit seeking up to $1 billion to repay victims of the Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme, the Mets have explored selling 20 to 25 percent of the club to fund a settlement. But Trump, like others, has expressed an interest in buying a majority share.

"The Wilpons are friends of mine, and I really hope it works out great for them," Trump said, according to the newspaper. "But if anything doesn't work out for them, I'd be interested in the team."

MLB would never approve a sale to Trump because of his ties to gambling and casinos, and that's too big a part of Trump's business to get rid of. Trump knows this but loves to get his name in the papers. I don't see the Mets being very successful at only selling a 20-25% chunk of the team. The people that are interested in buying want the whole team or at least a controlling share. Most serious buyers believe the Mets are eventually going to be forced to sell the team because their exposure to the Madoff scheme is much worse than they're letting on.

His right-wing fascist political statements at the CPAC convention of nuts recently wouldn't help either. Ya, he isn't getting a team even if he wants one.

It didnt suprise me one bit That the Cardinals and Pujols didnt reach an agreement today.

How it sounds. Pujols wants a 10yr/300mil contract(those are the rumors). But the cardinals only offered him a 8yr deal worth somewhere between 25mil and 30mil a year.

It doesnt supprise me that Pujols wants that kind of money. He is probably thinking. If A-Rod is getting a 10yr/275mill contract. I should be atleast getting that, if not more.

Cubs broadcast replacement for Ron Santo

Via Twitter:

Mixed emotions here, Keith Moreland is new radio analyst for Chicago Cubs. Great friend and partner on a number of broadcasts on TV & radio

--Roger Wallace

It's Moreland. Welcome to the team, Keith. FYI @lenandbob are great co-workers. #Cubs

--WGNTV

Interested in fate's thoughts on this if you are around. I like Moreland in the times he filled in for Santo. I also liked the other candidate Otto although most Cub fans didn't like him. Good choice.

I really don't have strong thoughts on this. I listen to virtually every Cubs day game at work and don't really have strong feelings about Moreland or Otto. I'm glad they went with an experienced internal candidate rather than someone without a Cubs background or a former player without a radio background. It's going to be very different not hearing Santo cheering during the game.

Tigers star first baseman Miguel Cabrera was arrested last night for driving under the influence. Cabrera was found by officers on the side of the road with his car engine smoking. Cabrera was reportedly uncooperative with police, refused to take a break test, took a swig of scotch in front of a deputy, and used the line ''Do you know who I am, you don't know anything about my problems.'' Cabrera was released by the police this morning and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and resisting an officer without violence.

This isn't Cabrera's first incident involving alcohol. In 2009 he got into a fight with his wife while he was drunk and was taken into custody the night before his team's second to last game of the season, a loss to the White Sox in which Cabrera went 0-4. If the Tigers had won that game and their final game they would have won the division. Instead they ended up losing a one-game playoff to the Twins. Cabrera also spent three months in rehab in 2010. Cabrera is entering the third year of an eight-year, $152.3 million contract.

With Pujol's deadline passing without a contract, there has been much speculation about interest in him when he becomes a free agent in 2012.

One of the more interesting ones are articles noting that with the Red Sox' expiring contracts(upwards of fifty million dollars) and the possibility of some of their prospects taking starting roles at low money(Ryan Kalish and Julio Iglesias), it would be feasible for them to sign Pujols without increasing their total payroll.

While I don't think its' likely, it's fun to speculate. Anyone else have any interesting thoughts on where he might land?
