Bob Nightengale of USA Today told Jim Bowden of MLB Network Radio on Monday that he thinks it's possible Francisco Liriano will be traded to the Yankees sometime in the next two weeks.
We've heard discussion about the Twins possibly trading Liriano from a variety of sources, so it appears this rumor has legs. The Yankees have an obvious need in their rotation, but the Twins would be trading away the closest thing they have to an ace at the moment. According to Nightengale, the Twins would acquire either Ivan Nova or Joba Chamberlain, in addition to other pieces. Stay tuned, because it sounds like things are about to get very interesting.

If I were the Yankees I'd give up Joba but not Nova. It really doesn't look like Liriano will ever be healthy for a prolonged period of time.

Beckett hit by ball, has concussion symptoms

Boston Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett was OK after getting hit on the left side of the head with a ball before Monday's spring training game.

Beckett, who was standing in left-center field, went to one knee after he was struck and teammates immediately called for the training staff. He was escorted off the field with his hand on his head.

The Red Sox said the pitcher did not need to be taken to the hospital and was treated at the park.

The ball that struck Beckett was hit by Red Sox staffer Ino Guerrero, who was standing in the outfield hitting shagged balls with a fungo bat back to a bucket behind second base when one got away from him.

Beckett is scheduled to make his next spring training start Thursday.

I appreciate your optimism but the AL East is super competitive this year especially the Red Sox.

Well super competitive at the top. I really doubt Tampa Bay will be a factor this season. It's down to Yankees-Red Sox once again. I think of Boston's starters stay relatively healthy they have a slight edge. But that's a big "if." Beckett always seems to be hurt and he already took a nasty hit to the side of his face in spring training. Either way I'd be shocked if both Boston and NY don't both end up in the playoffs.

Chris Carpenter injures hamstring

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter has injured his left hamstring in his spring training debut but doesn't think it's a serious injury.

Carpenter allowed one hit in 2 2/3 innings on Tuesday against the Florida Marlins before calling for a trainer. The right-hander, 16-9 with a 3.22 ERA last year, got the first two outs and walked Chris Coghlan before leaving the game.

Carpenter said he threw one more pitch after feeling the hamstring tug. He said he wasn't that concerned about the injury.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said Tuesday that there's no timetable for Joe Mauer (knee) to make his spring debut.
The Twins are taking it easy with Mauerafter offseason knee surgery, though he is taking part in batting practice and participating in team workouts. "I'm not saying tomorrow or the next day. But the first thing is to get him into catching bullpens and eventually get him into games. No timetable yet." It wouldn't be surprising if the Twins initially use him as a DH once he's deemed ready for game action.

Another Cubs scuffle in the dugout

MARYVALE, Ariz. -- Chicago Cubs manager Mike Quade will hold a team meeting in the wake of a dugout confrontation Wednesday between pitcher Carlos Silva and third baseman Aramis Ramirez.

Quade, who will hold the meeting on Thursday, also said there would be no discipline handed down from him.

"You've got two pissed-off people," Quade said after the 12-5 loss to the Brewers. "It was a brutal first inning with plenty of blame to go around, and people get frustrated. Maybe that's what we freaking need. Maybe we need to get pissed off.

"I mean it's Day 4 of spring training. I got no business getting all fired up on four days of work. But it's getting to the point where that was really tough to watch.

"We need to have a conversation tomorrow," Quade said. "Not just about [the fight and the errors] but just getting ourselves back to playing baseball."

Silva did not want to talk to the media, according to a Cubs spokesperson.

"I've never had that problem in my life, even during the regular season," Ramirez said. "Nowhere, I've never gotten involved with a teammate like that.

"That's in the past, then you move on."

In the first inning, Ramirez made one of three Cubs errors and Silva gave up two home runs as the Brewers grabbed a 6-1 lead. It was after the inning when the scuffle ensued.

"It was in the heat of the moment," Ramirez said. "I guarantee you after you shower and sit down, you realize you made a mistake.

"And that shouldn't happen, because we're going to be together for a long time in here. We should work it out."

Silva is vying for a spot in the starting rotation. He has maintained that based on his performance early last season that he already has proved he should be a starter. Quade has not named a fourth or fifth starter at this point.

"He wants to do good," Ramirez said. "It matters to him. It might not matter to [starters Matt] Garza or [Ryan] Dempster, they have their spots secured.

"But [Silva] has to do good to make the rotation. And obviously he didn't do it today."

Quade said Silva, "just needs to go out and pitch, get his innings in and pitch well."

Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano said the Cubs have enough pressure without controversy.

"They have to talk," Soriano said. "If they talk, everything will be normal. We are all on the same team. We have to do what's best for everybody."

The Cubs made headlines last season when Carlos Zambrano confronted Derrek Lee in the dugout on June 25 during a loss in U.S. Cellular Field. Zambrano was suspended and had to undergo anger management classes.

"[Silva] and Aramis have a lot of years in the big leagues, so I hope when they talk they put this thing behind them," Soriano said. "We have a lot of pressure in Chicago with the fans and the media, so we don't need that on the team."

Zambrano went through anger management therapy. He's mellow now. I have high hopes for him this year. Last year after his suspension (and therapy) he went 8-0, and he's supposedly in the best shape of his life.

I'm more concerned about all the errors the Cubs are committing. I know it's early in spring training and the players are not used to live action but it could still get in their heads. I'm going to see them next Wednesday so hopefully they start playing better.
