O's got the east this year

Are the Yankees really not selling out games for the opening series of the year? Looking at the ESPN box score attendance was 79% of capacity today. And this is a weekend game. First game of the year attendance was 92% of capacity.

I flipped on the Oriole game after the Leafs game and Buck has this club believing. What a play by Markakis to end the game. I see you have Kevin Gregg as your closer. Be ready for some tense 9th innings as he rarely gets 'em 1-2-3. I had to leave the room a few times last year when he was pitching. It's good to see the O's get off to a good start and to see the Red Sox get pasted again (12-3 Rangers in the 6th).

LOL Gotta love the AL East. Even the periennal losers like Toronto and Baltimore talk junk.

I've noticed that too...maybe it's the economy? First weekend of the season and it isn't sold out..it is odd.

In case anyone had any doubt about Florida not deserving MLB teams the Rays are averaging 28K attendance their first two home games of the season. And that's with the lowest opening day ticket prices (avg of $25) of any MLB team and with a very talented team.

Tampa should have never gotten an MLB team in the first place, the market is too small to support a team. Tommy Hanson looked like he had nothing today. His fastball was erratic and lifeless. Chipper looks like his swing is back, but he is going to cost us so many runs on defense this year. He should not be playing the field anymore, his range at third is as bad as I have ever seen.

It's not just the market size. Miami (with a huge metro area population) also has a team in the Marlins that has two champonships and their attendance/fan following has always been garbage. MLB just doesn't work in Florida. It's been a disaster since day 1 for both franchises. The Marlins and Rays are poster childs for over-expansion in pro sports. MLB would be far better off if franchises like Tampa, Florida, Kansas City, Pittsburgh and a few more deadbeat franchises were contracted.

One of the MLB Network guys were saying the Braves weren't going anywhere this year without Chipper. I had to do a double take on that comment.

Honestly, I'm a lifelong fan of Chipper and after last season given his age and health I was hoping he'd just retire so the Braves would have more to spend on younger talent. So much for that, he proved me wrong.

This Boston team seems extremely overrated IMO. Ya, they're better than last year. But 2/3rds of MLB analysts picking them to win it all is greatly exaggerating their talent level. I'd still take Philadelphia and their 4 terrific starters over Boston anyday.

Yeah Chipper has been one of my favorite players through the years. I still have his draft rookie card. Hopefully he doesn't go out with an embarrassing season like Garret Anderson did.
