Is $20 million now the new floor for above average but not quite elite players?

Ryan Braun signed a 5 year 105 million extension for the brewers.

Ryan Braun is one of the best, if not the best outfielders in the game. If other players are getting paid that he is certainly worth it. All though I think all salaries should be lower.

And he's now under contract through 2020 with Milwaukee. I have a feeling that deal is going to look really bad several years down the road.

I've got to think that takes them out of the running for Prince Fielder when his contact expires after the season. I also don't understand extending Braun now. He was already signed through 2015. Why not wait until 2013 or 2014 to make sure he doesn't suffer an injury? Maybe his price tag will go up but in my opinion that's a risk worth taking.

It should be interesting to see where Prince goes after this season. His agent is Scott Boras and he reportedly wants an 8-year, $200 million contract. I can't see anyone coming close to that with the Red Sox, Yankees, and Phillies set at first. The Angels could use a first baseman but don't like to negotiate with Boras. The Cubs are going to try and get Pujols and if they fail there they could look at Fielder as a fallback but wouldn't pay near $25 million per year. Fielder is only going to be 26 after this season but players his size like his dad and Mo Vaughn had a significant downturn when they turn 30 so it may be difficult to get more than a 5-year deal.

Justin Morneau (flu) is out of the starting lineup for the fifth straight game Thursday.
Morneau is still fighting his way back from a particularly nasty case of the flu. Michael Cuddyer will fill in at first base again Thursday and bat fourth against right-hander Jeremy Guthrie.

Ya, their salary is whatever the market says it is. Most fans it seems don't take it into account how drastic the difference in taxes/cost of living can be between franchises. The players on the Yankees or California teams literally have to make 20% more than an equal player on say the Marlins or Rays to end up with the same take home pay. Florida or Texas for example have no state income taxes and the cost of a home or apartment can be tiny in those states compared to NYC or LA. That's part of what makes finances of the game so crazy.

Excuse me if I don't feel sympathy that their multi-million doller annual figure gets taxed a little more in other parts of the country.

Commish: 10 teams in playoffs for '12

Quote:
NEW YORK -- Commissioner Bud Selig expects the playoffs to expand from eight teams to 10 for the 2012 season.

Selig went public last fall with his support for expanded playoffs, and the matter is subject to collective bargaining with the players' association.

"I would say we're moving to expanding the playoffs, but there's a myriad of details to work out," Selig said Thursday at his annual meeting with The Associated Press Sports Editors. "Ten is a fair number."
Playoffs

Great news to me

Amazingly stupid. MLB was far more fun with 4 divisions and 4 playoff teams. I hate the Wild Card nonsense and this will only make it worse. Awesome, now we get more mediocre 80'ish win teams winning championships.

That has absolutely nothing to do with what I said really. I didn't ask you how much you think a player should make. I was pointing out what goes through a player's mind as to where to play. And regardless what a player makes something like half will end up bankrupt anyway. Pro athletes are notoriously bad with their money.

NBA and NFL players are the worst of the bunch. Ron Artest is a prime example. He went broke during his rookie year with the Bulls. The guy was spending his money as if he was printing it himself. With that said, At least the NBA (not sure about the other pro sports) have workshops that deal with how players should be smart about their money during rookie orientation. All pro sports should have something like this as well.

I think infamous NFL bust JaMarcus Russell somehow already blew through the $30 mill+ in guaranteed money he got from Oakland. I read somewhere that something like half of NBA players go broke within 5 years of retirement. Even athletes that I always took for very intelligent individuals such as Jags QB Mark Brunell have gone bankrupt. It's unreal how many athletes blow their money with terrible investments like real estate or turning over their assets to guys like Bernie Madoff.

You really can't blame people for Madoff (even though he "made off" with their money.) but, it really boggles my mind that how some people can blow through millions so quickly and don't think about tomorrow).

If someone claimed they'd give me the kind of ridiculous returns Madoff did I'd call the cops, because I'd know it was a scam. Unfortunately most athletes don't have a business degree (I'm a Finance grad) to realize obvious scams. In the real world it's almost impossible to significantly "beat the market." Though I do find it astounding that self-made millionaires even managed to get hooked in a Ponzi scheme. It seems like most pro athletes behave in a way that they assume they'll keep making millions every year for life, when in reality sports careers (especially NFL) might only last a few years.
